How do you plan out things for your forums?

Such as creating events, adding new features, changing layouts, etc.

Do you take some time and perhaps write down how you are going to do things? Or do you just go ahead and do it on the spot and do things as you go along?

Brainstorm with the staff. Post threads on the forum asking for member input. Spur of the moment idea.. etc. There is not real process to it.

For existing forums I would do exactly what Theezy said. If I am making a new forum, I'd think things out, maybe write it down. Don't do it just as you think of it because you will probably come up with a better idea later 😉

Always plan things out before starting a forum. Write it all down via notepad and play around with it for a few weeks until it seems sound and feel it is right then go ahead with setting it up.

If it's a forum that is already live, then we will see what's working or not and then discuss it with staff members to see if any changes could be made.

We also did an anonymous survey one time via another website so members could express their opinions about Daily Chatter forum with some privacy which went very well and we implemented these changes which works out well for us the staff knowing this is what the members liked or disliked about the forum.

I would definitely write things out before anything, and also work out future costs. I would work categorically, eg. looking at forum structure, forum groups, advertising methods, graphics; and build everything first on a subdomain, eg. test.example.com, and then transfer everything to the main directory when everything is finalised.
