How do you feel about people who get cosmetic work done?

Would you ever consider (or have you had) plastic surgery? What would you get done?

I have never had it done, nor would I ever. People who have plastic surgery are sad and need serious help. Unless you had a terrible accident that required some cosmetic surgery to fix, there's absolutely no reason for people to "fix themselves up". The people who have cosmetic surgery, in my opinion, need treatment to help with their self esteem, not a surgery.

If you can't be happy with how you were born, you will never be happy with yourself, regardless of how much work you have done.

I think if a person wants to get bigger boobs, a new nose, something unsightly removed (or whatever else), there's nothing wrong with that as long as they don't go overboard. If it makes them happy, who am I to judge?

My 80-something year old grandpa had skin drooping down from above his eye lids because he is old and the skin up there got loose, it was obstructing his vision so he had the excess skin removed through cosmetic surgery.

Thing is, most people who get surgery such as bigger boobs don't do it for them, they do it to impress others. I'm not one to judge, but if I hear about someone getting bigger boobs or something stupid and unnecessary, I will judge the hell out of them. There is no medical benefit to bigger boobs. In fact, the bigger they are the harder they are on the woman's back.

There will never be a justification for getting cosmetic surgery "just for fun". Medically, if it's absolutely needed, I'm fine by it, but a girl choosing to change how she looks just to impress members of the opposite sex? Pathetic.

I agree 100%. I am a big believer in being all natural.

This. I think it's ok if its because they had an accident or was born with a problem but otherwise I think its just stupid.

Medically necessary is defined by whom? If you think about it, poor self esteem can translate into stress and extreme amounts of stress can be deadly (related article: webmd.com/stress). So fixing something cosmetic that's been bothering a person can improve self confidence and relieve stress, making it medically beneficial. Just saying. 😛

Although I personally prefer a natural look. Plastic surgery that is easily visually noticeable is really unappealing, but again not my place to judge.

I only like the idea of plastic surgery to fix serious physical injuries. Just doing it to look better just seems rather sad to see, because I'd rather that person be happy with how they were naturally meant to be, instead of having to feel like they need to have surgery to try and feel more accepted for their appearance. If they want to it's of course down to them, but I would rather see everyone accepted and loved for how they were naturally born to be, instead of being accepted and loved for something that isn't "real".

Cosmetic Surgery has come a long, long way. If you have the cash and a balanced perspective and realistic expectations, why not? Good number of people have become happier and more functional because of it.

I personally do not see an issue with it unless you are someone with problems. The obsessed people that find themselves only good through improvements. On the subject of a depression or whatever you wish to call it. Some doctors I disapprove of in terms of trying to make possible customers feel insecure to push a surgery onto them. Also, the whole unlicensed do it yourself at home people ruin the cosmetic business as well.

Overall, I have no problem with personal expression means as it is sort of like a tattoo. As some have said above the injury thing I approve of as well.

I myself would never even consider plastic surgery... Mainly because of the risks involved; it seems silly to put yourself at risk in order to deem yourself 'pretty' or whatever. But as some have previously said, if it's to fix certain injuries or something similar that's holding you back, then I'd consider it. Still, I don't disagree with other people doing it because it's their body and their choice.

I think I wouldn't really have any strong feelings about it. It is up to them what they do with their bodies. I don't really care if it is medical or purely cosmetic.

Only the person taking the decision knows what they are going through. It might look for us that it is a vain "fix" and easily decree the person should love themselves the way they are, but then there are too many so quick to mock what is not the norm. Most people being self righteous about it have not gone through the pressure of mockery for something you can't change at will. Not all corrections are for fine-tuning details, though I feel that even those are up to the person doing it. Really my concern would be more for their safety with them doing too many or with a person with not enough skills just to save some bucks. A passing thought unless I know the person in question.

Only time can tell if I will ever consider it, but as for now I find definitely not reason to do it. I am too terrified of the idea of operations so I haven't so far.

I think it is down to people how they feel about there self really. It is there own choice and I think it is good if people want to have it. I am not against it. It has helped a lot of people IMO. And I think more people will use it in years to come really. And there is medical reasons. I think people have it as a treat for having liposuction for there Birthday. I think it doesn't matter how much they use it though as long as people are happy I don't mind at all.

-- 22 Jul 2014, 20:37 --

How does it make you depressed anyway? If they have it they don't have serious issues.

A lot of people are very self conscious, and sometimes they will go to the end of the world to get work done, as it bothers them so much. Some people have very serious weight issues and need to remove the fat from their body.

And these people could be bullied to an extent, and might be extremely upset with themselves and they see this as the only way out and its their body so they can do what ever they want with it.

And then there is the need for plastic surgery when it comes to burns or other traumatic injury. Plastic surgery is a useful elective in medicine, and help a lot of people
