Do you play Devil's Advocate in discussions or debates? Does that hurt your true position? Do people know you're doing it?

Well, someone's gotta do it. It seems like that on a lot of sites people are just wanting to their ego massaged.

I do it all the time especially if a member's view starts to become too strident. I do rather believe that a good admin/moderator needs to leave their personal views at the forum door.

I've always been pretty open about my opinions and views to the point it has made me look like an antagonist in the past. Lately I've been staying out of political and religious debates. I don't mind starting those topics to boost activity, but that's as far I've gone. I find that certain debates cause division and I'd rather be the guy that "some" people like rather than be that guy everyone hates.

A lot of people want an echo chamber. In fact, I made the post about "chainsaws and snowflakes" as sarcasm, being a smarty-pants, but there is some sick truth there. I just feel like people dwell on and on with their extreme views these days.
