If you can help me fix my computer you win a prize.

I am using Windows XP and my firewall is blocking everything that updated to the next version. Such as FileZilla, FireFox and many other neccesities.

I go to add an exception, and it just closes out, I need to add an exception in firewall but it wont let me, help!

If it's the computer firewall then it is annoying. I used to have these issues but I brought a anti virus that came with it's own firewall and just disabled windows one. I haven't had any issues so far.

I don't think the free version does, it all comes down to how well you look after your PC. While free versions may be good, they will never be as good as paid versions. So if you have that little extra money use it and secure your PC.

Note: Of course you won't be 100% secured, but you'll be on the way.

Ok, well right now, I need an antivirus with a firewall. I need it free. If I turn off Windows firewall, it keeps the changes, in Norton, it didn't.

So I need a free virus scanner with a firewall to override windows firewall

Sorry im not really into all this "anti virus" crap, I just buy whatever has good reviews and get on with life 🙂

Ok no problem, I am googling free firewalls while my browser works.

Just look up reviews on it though, don't go getting a "good" one without viewing the reviews first as it might be some crap one. It's just like with hosting 🙂

I would have to say in my experience Commodo Firewall is the best I've used. It does well on leak tests, and if you want you can integrate it with an AV package so it will do scanning of your network data (not recommended). If you do get it (or any firewall, really), turn off Defense (active defense, or whatever the other's call it) unless you want to be nitpicked about every time your program wants to do anything on your computer.

As for your antivirus, AVG is a good product, but I usually recommend Antivir. Either one of those is good, though.

EDIT - Beware Antivirus/Firewall packages, they eat your resources like crazy.

@nathan just because you pay for it doesn't make it better 😛.

Anyways for a firewall use Commodo Firewall it is a great firewall.

For anti virus I suggest AVG or Clamwin.(the later not being as good, but alot lighter).

Oh and avg does have a firewall, but it is a separate download.

Here use this, everything listed here is free, sorry for taking it off on you =).

Okay, so since I have abit of knowledge in keeping computers safe, I will post all the Free Anti Virus stuff I use, and some I don't use, all these are free I won't be putting my Paid ones here. I will put information on each that aren't basic, E.G: Virus scanners will not have information as they are basic. Note: Some of these programs have free and paid versions, use whatever one you prefer, all of these are exceptional. This is in NO particular order.

The List
1. Comodo Internet Security 3.8 - Download
2. SUPERAntiSpyware - Download
3. VundoFix - Download
4. Trend Micro Hijack This™ - Download
5. SmitFraudFix - Download
6. SandBoxie - Download Information about SandBoxie - Sandboxie runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer. In other words anything you run in SandBoxie.. Stays in SandBoxie, if you download a infected file run it in SandBoxie, you then close SandBoxie and restart your computer, wow no virus? It's a really good program.
7. Avast! - Download
8. Anti-Vir - Download
9. AVG - http://www.avg.com/product-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
10. Trend Micro Housecall - Download
11. Kaspersky Online Scanner - Download
12. BitDefender Online Scanner - Download
13. CA Online Threat Scanner - Download
14. AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition - Download
15. Windows Defender - Download
16. Spybot S&D 1.5 - Download
17. Windows Live OneCare Safety Scan - Download
18. Prevx CSI - Download
19. Spyware Blaster - Download Infomation on Spyware blaster, this wonderful program is not a scanner, it real time protects you from installing Spyware, very nifty.
20. ThreatFire - Download
21. Comodo Free Firewall - Download
22. AVG Anti-Rootkit Free - Download
23. GMER - Download
24. WOT - Download WOT Info - WOT, short for Web Of Trust is an amazingly add on for Firefox. What does it do? Well people rate sites based on 4 attributes, won't go into them. If there is a site that has a poor Web Of Trust rating, it will warn you. It's a very useful add on I suggest you try it.
25. Malware Bytes - Download
26. Avira Download

Recommended Browser: Firefox Download

CCleaner is a nifty little program that cleans all your cache etc, it's really good and I run it everyday, you should too. Download

That's it, may add more later on. Do not use more than 1 Anti Virus software or more than 1 Firewall!

Since I made this myself, manually getting links, writing down the names etc, I would appreciate it if you don't steal it, if you want to use it ASK ME!

Rep is appreciated but not needed, a smile on your face because I helped you is enough.

By the way, I wipe my ass with Commodo Firewall, its that bad =).

Can't tell if you were serious or not, but in the list there, it was the only free firewall mentioned, so it must not be too bad. 😛 (Really, though, I used it for as long as I had my XP computer and I never had any problems with it.)

Just noticed this post, and as far as it goes, most of the free/paid products are starting to use the same signatures for their antiviruses, antirootkits, and antispyware and just adding additional features like gaming mode, scan as you surf, and firewalls to their products for the paid versions. Antivir, for example, can keep up with almost any paid antivirus out there when using the free version (now, the firewall on the paid version leaves much to be desired). For good firewalls, try Commodo or PC Tools, as they've both scored the best on leak tests.

Now, this being said, I'll just mention that I run a vista computer now that has Avira (I have it's active scanner disabled and just use it to scan USB drives before I use anything on them) and the Vista Firewall Control App, running Opera as my browser. I don't use any antivirus that actively protects my computer, but I've only gotten infected once in the entire year and a half I've had her. A little common sense on the web is better than any antivirus you'll find. 😉

That's due to it being the only seperate firewall, alot of the anti viruses in there have firewalls bundleded with them.

Unless I missed anything, it's still the only free firewall in there, because the listed AV/firewall bundles all cost money.

Oh, my mistake. I took the online scanners for the actual software packages. In that case, I go back to my original stance of that being the only firewall on the list. Which of these antiviruses are you talking about when you say that they have one bundled with them?

Oh no not at all, but 99% of the time they are :great:
I concur Alot of free programs beat there commercial ones by alot of ways maily.

An example would be AVG compared to Norton.

AVG is faster, more secure, and can detect alot more then norton can.
