PM Advertisers

How do you deal with these? I issued one a warning, removed their advertisement permissions for a month and removed their PM rights as I already told them not to PM advertise as they already advertised their site to me on PM. :lol: If it was a normal person I would just give them a PM reminder not to do it or they could lose their PM rights.

I have these issues with my forum. You get PM rights at 50 posts I believe, then they can be taken away if there is abuse. I think that's how the moderator set it up...

If there is to much spam in the Private Message section I'll most likely disable it for a little bit. It never really happened on my board. This one member however found it fun to send porn links to other members of our website. We immediately and permanently banned him since the majority of our forums members were kids.

It's quite hard to accuse a member of advertising through Private Messaging unless you have chat logs.

Used to have this problem on a forum I co-owned a few years ago. We just warned (aka asked them not to do it). We never had any other further problems with it. Though we wold have removed private messaging surely.

Yes. Some forums use them and read all your PM's and you never know.
I personally dont do that though.

On softwares that don't have a PM report feature, it's good to have PM logs but never actually use them unless you need to check something.

If you have the database you can read it anyway. I found that out accidentally when I was going through a db backup, and I saw things that weren't posted on the public forum. Once I found out they were pms, I stopped looking there. If there is a problem, the pms would get reported.

You can report PMs without premium on Zetaboards. I would disable the use of the PM system for such a member.

If you actually get a copy of a PM they've sent to another member, something I found very useful, is add the exact URL they used to advertise, and add it to your censored words list.

So when other members get the PM, later on, the url is edited out, and that member who is PM advertising will eventually see that it's useless and will give up.

Now thats a smart idea i dont got no pm advertising problems on my site right now but least thats a good idea for the future, thanks mate this idea great.

If there is one thing i hate, its advertisers specially pm advertisers... I cant stand them anymore, I have dealt with so many of them in the past... Im happy that I got a mod on my forum that lets me view PMs, mines a MyBB forum.

We ban their URL and if they are members who are also posting normal content they get a red bar warning. If they haven't posted at all and clearly only joined to spam we ban their URL and them.

Hah, that's a clever idea right there. Censor the link like it's a swear word, and then like you said, say if I got the PM, it will say something like "Link Removed" like it says when people advertise in places they aren't allowed to advertise in. I like that idea.
