What do you think of forums that use the Pm spy mod?
I would never instal it on my forums.
 
Well sometimes it has to be installed for security reasons although I think some people would think it's privacy invasion which it is although like I said, if a forum needs it then it might as well be installed.

Admins can do what they like though if it's their own forum.
 
I doubt their is a law in PM spying however there could be a privacy act in a certain country which forbids it.
 
PMs aren't encrypted like passwords in most forum scripts, you can see them all in the database. Mods like PM Spy only make this task easier, they don't really change much in regards to privacy.
 
I would just add that PMs are watched to my TOS... But I guess I'll only use the database when someone reports another to check things.. You know 😉
 
edit It'd be better adding it into the privacy policy than the TOS 😉
 
Well I think it should be Private, It is abit like reading someone else's texts on there phone, It never ends well.
 
I usually do not install this unless I find a real need to such as people aren't reporting offensive PMs and instead complaining about what that user said etc.

I agree, there is no need to install a "PM Spy" for any other reason. By the way, admins can easily see PM through phpmyadmin.
 
You can use PM Spy if all members are aware of it. Just post "Your PMs will be monitored for security purpose" in announcement/rules or even your sig. For example, here in USA, all calls are monitored for security purposes and George W. Bush announced it to public to inform them about this. Same can go for forums or anywhere else.
 
Its not something big but if you have trouble on your forum then you should install it. For me I wouldn't install it.
 
I dont read PM's. Private means private. If someone is PM advertising and I get multiple reports, there is a button in the ACP to delete all of a certain member's sent PM's at once.
 
I would never do it, and it is actually illegal in the country I am currently in, Germany, I believe.

But if your forum is based in some other country what happens if you have German users.
