Well, as of November 21, 2014 it is finally official: Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire have landed on store shelves in the US. Ended up getting Omega Ruby at Best Buy because Wal-mart was sold out already (either that or they hadn't stocked the games yet). Anyone else have these games yet? Which Version? What did you pick for your starter Pokemon? As I said, I got Omega Ruby and I'm loving every minute of it. In some ways it's a lot like the original Pokemon Ruby version, but in other ways not so much. I'm in Petalburg Woods as we speak, and I'm hoping to get the badge from Roxanne BEFORE I go to the dance tonight. I know what I'm doing all weekend otherwise!

Re: Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire out TODAY!!!!!!!!!

I'm thinking of picking up a pokemon game for my daughter for Christmas. Would you recommend this even if she's never played a pokemon game before? She's ten now and I introduced her to Pokemon two months ago - she loves it. So does my 3-year-old.

To me, you can play the Pokemon games in any order. There is no need to play the games chronologically. 🙂

No need to play the games in any specific order. As for ages tbey do say basic reading content is required so as long as your children nnow how to read and can understand basic reading concepts I see no reason why your children cannot play those games
However unless the have a Nintendo 2DS I would watch out for the 3D effects though till they're old enough to tolerate them.

Pokemon is Pokemon. You don't have to start with gen 1 no matter what genwunners say. I've started Pokemon with Hoenn/Gen 3 and not with the original games.

But yeah, I'd be careful on the 3D effects, unless they have a 2DS.

I don't think I've ever played the games in order. I started to but after a while I only got versions that looked interesting.

Yeah, there's definitely no need to play Pokemon in order, especially the remakes. You can just jump right in whenever. I think I'd probably recommend maybe playing Ruby or Sapphire before Emerald or Diamond/Pearl before Platinum or Black/White before Black 2/White 2, but that's just a personal preference and doesn't really apply here. .-.

Anyways, I picked up Omega Ruby on launch day, and I actually enjoyed Hoenn this time around. When I originally played, I wasn't a huge fan of it, and I wasn't up until I got Omega Ruby. It's still not one of my most favorite regions ever. (I'm one of those people who likes Kanto & Johto, but I also like Kalos, so I'm not entirely hopeless. xD) Hoenn's definitely grown on me though thanks to ORAS, so I'll give it that much. I had low expectations for liking the game, but those expectations were exceeded and then some.

I do like being able to fly to routes and other notable places on the map rather than just the cities/towns; it's definitely really helpful when you want to get to a specific place fast. Shame you can't just fly to your Secret Base though. 🙁 That would've been a really nifty feature.

Agreed! I like how you can also even just walk to each planted berry and water them with out stopping. Going out into outer space was pretty freakin' cool too.

That's my favorite part, too! It's handy for meeting up with characters for rematches and stuff. I love it! In the older games, if you wanted to get to a certain route, you had to fly to a given city and then walk or ride your bike just to get to that route. Very annoying and time consuming.
