Many know the saying "preaching to the choir", and that seems like what people want on social media and elsewhere. In other words, they're not interested in hearing other views, even if they say they are. In fact, in some circles, they will actually ban/persecute legit opposing views - even if they aren't harassing or obviously stupid.

No, most people just argue to confirm their beliefs. If your mind is closed or you are devoutly faithful to your own beliefs it is advisable to skip any and all debate sections. When you show a repeated refusal to listen to others views or accept objective evidence when The Burden of Proof is met, it ceases to become a discussion.
