Portal or Homepage

Portals are better IMO. Much easier to maintain, and you don't have to mess around with codes to display the things you want from your forums onto your homepage.

Neither.

To be honest I think the only people interested in the portal of a forum is the person maintaining the forum. The rest of us just want to get into to the forum so we can interact with the community. I did a poll once on another forum and I was surprised at how many people didnt care about the portal and found it more of a nuisance.

^This.

Portals are useless, especially the way that most people use them. The information given on portals is almost always the stuff you can find directly on the forums index page as well...

If I see a portal on a forum, I leave the site immediately unless I really need something from there. I can say the same for many other people. Fact is, not a lot of people know how to utilize a portal and make it efficient and useful; rather, they slap a bunch of stats and recent topics on there, like it's going to help anybody.

Portals are pretty ugly as well, unless customized.

A homepage is pretty much the same, except a lot of people tend to put a description of what the forum is about, a couple of other things, and that's it. Pretty much the same as a portal, but nicer.

Now, if it was a full-fledged website, that's another story.

yeah but that could easily be placed in a 'Welcome Guest' message the top of the forum (like on FA).

Yeah, exactly. The forum has everything necessary, so I don't see why people use landing pages/portals/splash pages and stuff like that. The only time there should be one is if it's a fully functional website or blog.
