Currently I am using a static page as a homepage for my forum, but Im looking for something that is a little more interactive and fun. So Im thinking about adding a portal 🙂, but I dont know if I should. What have been your past experiences with portals and which ones have you used?

Ive been looking at http://www.subdreamer.com/

I know of quite a few sites that use this one, though it's a reported pain in the ass to get working correctly;
http://www.mkportal.it/

Sometimes I like portals, and sometimes I don't. It depends on the site really.

Well if you are running a straight discussion forum (not a support forum for a product / service / website),
they arent useful and serve no real purpose. A simple paragraph in a "Welcome Guest" box is all you need to tell potential members what you are all about. Nobody cares about what filler you put on your portal / homepage. Chances are they are just looking for the "Enter Forum" link.

Joomla is the best portal, if it MATCHES.

I hate portals. That is just me. It takes away actual content and serves absolutely ZERO purpose to the forum.
