Yes, I think it is possible to buy a good computer for 200-300 US dollars for doing school and office work, web browsing, video, music, and basic gaming in low quality modes.

I seen some 299.99 dollar Windows 7 Home Premium desktops at stores with a dual core 1.30GHz CPU, 4GB of RAM, integrated video and sound, 500GB hard drive, DVD burner, and wired internet which are probably good enough for most basic tasks like school, office, work, web browsing, video, music, playing older games, etc.

It's definitely possible to find a good computer for basic use in the $300 range (or even lower sometimes). If you look at places like Newegg, they often have refurbished computers for very cheap.

When buying a refurbished computer should I spend the money I save on an extended warranty?

I got a refurbished HP desktop in 2007, and it still works great like the day I bought it. I just had to fix the case fan since it stop spinning after 5 years of use.

If it has good reviews, then I wouldn't personally buy an extended warranty. That would come down to personal opinion, though. It also depends on how often you get new computers.

Just build your own computer. It's pretty easy and you'll get more for your money

The operating system like Windows 7 Home Premium cost $99.99 for the OEM version, and Microsoft Office 2010 Student edition cost 129.99, so because of the software cost, and shipping and handling for the individual hardware pieces it can be more expensive sometimes since sometimes refurbished computers also come with a lot of useful software like MS Office, etc, and the operating system and you don't have to pay shipping and handling for each individual computer parts.

Building your own computer gets you its worth. I suggest NOT going for $300 computer and going for one in the $400-500 range if you're looking for something that will last you years and years.

I bought cheap computers, and replace the low wattage 200W power supply with a higher quality 400W power supply, and my cheap computers still work great today after using them for years for at least 4 hours everyday.

I also regularly clean up the dust inside to prevent the PC from overheating, so they won't ever suffer heat damage because of a dusty computer.

You could do more damage by constantly exposing your computer to external factors. It's best to keep it sheltered. 😛 Honestly, I clean once every 1-2 years, and it has gone well.

Thanks for the tip. I normally clean my computer once a year, or whenever I upgrade something, and I notice it is very dusty inside, or a fan is not spinning or spinning slowly because of dust in it.

Are you looking for a laptop or desktop?

Laptop, make it 500$

you're not gonna get a quad desktop for 200 or 300$ if you buy stock, if you build it yourself you could 😉

Gl!

By simply opening the case to clean the computer(which takes 5 minutes) will not harm your computer at all. Now if you left the case open 24/7 then yes that could cause problems.

My dad said that there's no point getting extended warranty because if something doesn't last a decent amount of time and you paid that much for it, it's rubbish and breaks the consumer rights act here, something like that.

My computer cost me $1000 that i got for christmas But i do agree buying something like that isn't really worth it, because in most places you will need windows 7 enterprise in order to successfully connect to A Business network.

When buying a commuter i got for the quality software onit and the design of the laptop/desktop.

In the United States, our consumer rights laws basically grant us the right to cry when everything breaks in three days (but go out and spend more money to replace it).

If I am getting a computer I don`t bother with a warranty as I have a great friend with a PC repair shop so if some thing does goes wrong with it I take to him 😀
