For those that have not seen my dog, look in the 'post your pic' thread. It's on the recent pages.

Well, Jessie[dog] has a really bad skin condition. We've tried to help him, but nothing works. It's bad to the point of he's actually scratched himself raw in some spots. Recently, he got lost for a long period of time and has a cold. =[ Well, my laptop has been introduced to sneezed germs.

The problem is my mom. She honestly cares more about her furniture than the dog. She won't let him on any of the furniture (even though he sneaks up there). My old dog died of old age, so I've missed having a dog. It just confuses me how someone could care more for items than a living being. Mom has been talking about giving him away for a long time now, but not to a shelter..they'd put him down because he's a bit miserable with his skin issues..but he's a fun dog. He likes to play, and has been turned into a lapdog (by yours truly).

Just so this thread isn't about me, have you ever had to give a pet away?

I know how you feel partially. I had to give my tiny maltese dog away once. 🙁

No nor could I - I have rescued 2 dogs from shelters and have one now, please fight to keep your dog, this sort of thing really saddens me.

Poor little love how can she not feel for a pet with these issues and even "think" for one minute of giving him away ...... goodness please do what you can to change her mind hon 🙁

She does love him, but to her, the furniture comes first..dunno why. I have been trying to keep him, but I dunno if I'll win.

I never had to give an animal away, my mother is a real animal lover. Keep fighting, and continue your quest into convincing your mother to keep the animal. However if your dog is in a state where you believe he is in pain I would seriously consider euthanasia. I cannot stand people who let their animals suffer simply because 'they love them'. That's a real selfish act according to my book...

Good luck Grievous, please keep us posted on your situation.

I hate situations like this, but all we can do is spend as much time with the pet as you can. 🙂

I have considered euthanasia, but you have to try and think from the dogs view. Yes, he is suffering because of his skin condition, but that doesn't stop him from wanting to play and have fun.

We were giving him benedryl(sp?), but it didn't work, so we switched to claratin, which does help a little bit.

It's also that, what if he knew what was happening? I could imagine him thinking 'It's just a skin condition..you're putting me to death for this? I'm sorry for getting on the couch' honestly brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.
Thanks, I will.

Euthanasia is a really serious thing. My cat had been suffering for a long time, vomiting constantly, a lot of times with blood. We decided to put her to sleep.

I know it does not compare to a skin condition, I just want to tell you that putting her to sleep was the saddest thing I have ever known. I would not recommend it unless your dog is in terrible shape, which it does not seem like.

I know..thanks. I'll try to get a better pic posted of him (but it won't won't be 'till tomorrow [Monday]).

I don't understand. A decision like this needs to be a group discussion, with family. This is a huge decision, and one person shouldn't get to make the decision, regardless if it is your mom.

She has mentioned about maybe giving him to a friend who will take care of him, but I dunno if I can let him go. This is all her fault. Jessie wasn't really our choice to get - mom's ex owned him, but after he left..he basically left Jessie with us.

At first, I wanted nothing to do with Jessie because I knew, attachment=pain at some point when the dog dies, or you have to give them away..but overtime, I just got attached to him.

Thank you, I had not viewed it from that perspective. It made me wonder if my cat was in that same condition what I would do. The first thing I can tell you is not to give him away, your conscious would constantly be tormenting you. You would continuously be asking yourself if he is alright, if he needs food-water, or if he needs you!

It's going to be a very difficult decision. When the opportunity arises talk with your mom about the feelings you are experiencing and try thinking of an alternate solution. Good luck mate, and remember we are here for you on this forum. 😉

I'll talk to her tomorrow about it and see if there any other solutions. I know my brother loves my dog, so possibly we could get him to take him. I'll find out, though.

The stupid people next door made us give away our cat, because they thought it was a health risk to their stupid little baby because it pooped on the path, I hate them now

When you pay hundreds of pounds on furniture when you get older, you'll understand. Nonetheless, I'm sorry to hear about your dog.

It doesn't matter how much you pay for furniture. Dogs are living, breathing, beings. Why should they be chosen 2nd over furniture you could just go by again.

Thanks.

We'll ask this question again later in your life when you have to buy the furniture. Sometimes it's not as simple to just "buy" again. I wish it was. Dogs and cats are not essential. Sure they are great and it's sad to leave/get rid of them but sometimes sacrifices have to be made. Especially in this bad recession.

Thanks.

We had to give our beagle to my parents because he had a very aggressive behaviour and we felt he was dangerous towards our new daughter. I still see him when i go to my parents, and i can tell he misses us. I feel really bad, especially cause i know he gets treated poorly by my dad. My dog isnt the most well behaved dog, lol
