So I was trying to buy a domain from namecheap. The one I selected was a marketplace "premium" domain being sold by a 3rd party. Namecheap told me that it would take 5-20 days for the domain to be transferred to my account. 20+ days have passed and now they're telling me there is no guarantee the 3rd party will complete the sale. I've requested a refund because I don't want to wait around indefinitely for them to get around to transferring the domain to Namecheap. This sucks because I had already started working on my project using the name/domain I thought I was going to have. Now I have to think of a new name and go back and do edits all over the site once I have a new name/domain.

Anyone ever have success buying premium domains from registrars?

One would think after you pay they would have to commit to a certain time period to transfer you the domain however I've never purchased one so I'm really not sure how they work with premium domains.

That’s sounds like a massive scam if you’re paying money and they’re not transferring a domain which in theory takes literal minutes to do.

I think the seller is committing fraud and scamming you and NameCheap is pleading ignorance as they’re only acting as middleman.

I’d never buy a premium domain for any reason. Domains are temporary and the thought of paying more than normal is ludicrous to me.

I was wanting a .com or a .net and anything decent is a “premium domain” and some of them aren’t much more than the regular registration fee. I think companies just buy up any available .com or .net and resell them for a profit. Well there is no profit to be made if they don’t transfer the domain after someone offers them the money they are asking. Lol

Update, I received my refund from namecheap with no issues. It worked out for the best because I found another domain that I like even better. I ended up going with another premium domain that I purchased through dan.com.

I had an excellent experience with dan.com. They transferred the domain I bought into my namecheap account within a couple hours of purchasing. Now I can finally work on my new project. Yay!

I did not know namecheap also sold third party domains. I always thought the domains on namecheap domain marketplaces were registered on namecheap. I once bought a domain for a small price. The next year when I was trying to renew the domain namecheap said it was a premium domain. . I have been renewing the domain for more than 5 years. By the way, what kind of project do you have in mind, I have a lot of domains. We can talk if you want.

Honestly this is one of the reasons why I've never bought a premium domain name. That and they're usually thousands of dollars so I don't have the money for it. 😛 I'm happy you were able to go with a different registrar and got the perfect domain for your project @Nebulous! I'm looking forward to seeing your forum when it's up and running!

The project is a general discussion type community. Also thanks for the offer but I’m happy with my domain choice. I had to pay a little extra for the .com but the .net was unregistered so I got that one too and redirected it to my .com

Thanks! They can be thousands of dollars but I’ve seen decent ones for $25 to $200. I don’t think Dan.com is a registrar, it’s just a marketplace for domains. They handle the sale and transfer the domain to the registrar of your choice. I have no problems with Namecheap and I still use them, I just had an issue with a domain seller on their marketplace not responding to my offer. I waited a month and moved on.
