When looking at getting a new more unique theme for your forum should one consider a full fledged custom theme or maybe go with something a little less expensive as a Premium theme?

What I usually do is to get a free one which looks close to my 'premium dream' and then go about modifying things. It saves money as well as teaches us things 😀

That's an interesting idea, thanks Roco 🙂

You can always get a Premium Theme and work on it modifying it to how you would like it! I feel the prices on a fully custom theme are still to high right now.

Premium because you can save money. 😛

you probably could consider a custom one later down the line, if you want a specific style/colors/effects/layout.

That only works if the creator allows such extensive edits. A lot of the themes I see released often allow only minor edits such as font sizes and font colour if it happens to be difficult to read.

For me though, I always design my own themes for my forum, so I have no problems about cost or finding someone who can do it.

It really depends on the budget and on how much time that I currently have available. Creating a theme takes plenty of time, time which I could spend on other things like promoting the site.

If you're going to spend money on a premium theme, you might as well cough up a little extra for a custom one. I prefer to get a custom one because I know no other forum will look like mine. I like the uniqueness.

Most places you go to get a custom theme are rather costly where a premium theme can cost as little as $15

Daniel, I think that it depends on the Designer, on the Forum Software and on what website the seller is using. If a theme costs 50$, you may want to collect a bit more cash and order a custom one! 😀

I'd like to know where you have bought a quality custom mybb theme for under 100+ dollars

I like premium themes, but I sometimes edit them slightly to fit my preferences. You can even find some free themes that are a nice base and as long as the license allows it, you can change it around and edit them to be a bit more unique.

You can buy a custom theme but what about when new versions of the software come out? Is that custom theme designer going to keep you updated forever? Usually if you buy a premium them, you'll stay updated as new versions are released. I have seen some that charge for an updated theme though.

That's certainly something to keep in mind, cause it would really suck if you paid a chunk of money out of pocket for a custom theme just for the theme to not work once your forum software had an update.

I usually just design and code my own forum and website themes. I'm a website developer by day job, so the latter part isn't particularly difficult, and it saves money in the process.
