Proboards under DDoS Attacks

Huh. I don't understand why people will fork out the expense to do something like that.
There are a lot of reasons including extortion, competitor attacks, espionage, revenge, proof of technical proficiency or simply because they can. In this case, if it is a DDoS attack, I would suspect a disgruntled user if there's been no attempt at extortion.

I know why people do it, as I said, I just don't understand why someone would fork out an expensive attack to do something like that in the first place. :penguin:

And the craziness begins, which means that people have to protect their content/site and pray that they won't get attacked and it's a waiting game to get back to normal. is it since they are bored or dislike something for a attack

Sadly, it only costs around $20 to take down most servers for about an hour. It's cheaper than you'd think.
Well yeah, I have a free software that I use to test load potentials for the server I get from a host, when the host is being vague about how much traffic can be on the site at one time. Doesn't take much to take down a site that is on subpar hosting, and which does not having DDoS mitigation plans in place. Yet, ProBoards does make significant enough money to have all the stuff needed to mitigate that stuff, and they were bought by a company that has the funds to do so.

This whole situation makes me wonder exactly how much traffic from a DDoS attack had to be sent, to effectively cause system wide issues for ProBoards as a whole, not just a single server that one forum is on.

*insert oh no anyway meme here*

But why proboards? It's like the most subpar service on the net.
I wouldn't say subpar per se. It's been around for a long time & many people use it. It has changed hands & will be going to the new version, V6. While I like the ease of use, I only stay because I would have to start over from scratch if I moved over.

It is basic and simple, though limited. More could have been done on other services.

I can appreciate ProBoards not bowing down. Based on that announcement, it sounds like the attackers demanded that they remove a particular forum. That would set a terrible precedence.

Is anyone experiencing issues at this point in time? Seems good on my end.

All the sites I visit seem to be loading just fine for me.
My forum is loading good & I've been able to be on other PB forums just fine.

I don't get the point of ruining the service for other people when one forum wasn't going to be removed. If they don't like the forum, then just don't visit it! :V Glad Proboards is doing better now though!
