You can go sign up for the ProBoards V5 Closed Beta:
http://www.proboards.com/beta/
ProBoards V5 is the next ProBoards software version.
I have already signed up, I recommend you do the same.
You need a ProBoards Support account.

I wonder if they are going to make their own software or just use the next update from YaBB (the software their forums use).

ProBoards doesn't use YaBB. ProBoards was on YaBB back on V2. All the other versions have been custom software. They will make their own software for V5, they already have made it, now they're having closed beta testing for it.

Their current software still looks like yabb. They might have customized it but its still the same.

It kind of looks like phpBB to me. I've never even noticed they were on a custom script. 😛

It is no longer on Yabb, but of course the layout is still similar to Yabb. Who cares? 😛 For V5, one of the things they will be giving full access to finally, is the full template, so you can literally make it look different than their basic forum, so I doub't that is much of an issue. By full access, they are willing to let you remove, move, or totally change everything on your forum. So Yeah.

Signed up a few days ago, and am waiting for when they decide to send out the invitations.

No, it's not a customized version of YaBB. Patrick created the software based off YaBB though.

I've signed up for the Beta. I used Proboards in the past and can't wait to see what they bring in v5.

You need to make sure the email you have on your ProBoards Support account is still working and valid, otherwise I don't think you will be able to be a ProBoards V5 beta tester.

Way ahead of you. 🙂 Thanks though.

I haven't used Proboards from an administrator's perspective in ages. I tried them out as a test run once, and actually even considered doing a live forum on them, but decided not to. It's been a while so I can't remember what I disliked about them.

ProBoards administrator Patrick Clinger said this:

We'll be inviting about 100 people per week to join. Beta starting soon, we want to get some last changes out before we fire things up. There are over 600 people signed up so far.

I hope they improve their admincp with this release. I always wanted to play with proboards, but the admincp always killed it for me.

I don't think a "closed beta" and "inviting 100 members per week" will hype up their product or increase anticipation very much. They should be open and let everyone check out what they are doing.

I think they might do a open beta, after the close beta. Considering when they were about to release the current version that the software is on, they allowed administrators to make a direct copy of their forum into a pre-release copy of the software, so that adjustments to their codes could be made before the actual release.

The admin panel is supposed to be completely different now.

Tell ProBoards that? 😛
Anyways, they will be having an open beta later I think.
I know ProBoards forum administrators will be able to convert their forum to V5 early if they so choose; during the open beta.

I think Patrick Clinger said that's what they're doing somewhere. I hope so, I am hoping my forum can make a nice and smooth change to V5. So, I want to have a new custom skin and such ready as soon as possible. It makes me sad that we don't get to see the new admin panel until open beta.

The first batch of emails have been sent out! Check your emails. I am not in the first batch.
