Congrats to them for catching up to what forum software's have been doing for years. 😛

Honestly, I don't even like it. They're trying to be like all kinds of different popular forum software out there, but there's a reason some web designers and programmers still enjoy ProBoards even after they have moved on to bigger and better things. I like how simple ProBoards is. It starts off awful, but if you know what you're doing, you can turn a ProBoards forum into something spectacular. Now, I see a future where all forums are using the same few themes. No originality or anything. Also, the ProBoards owners and developers talk like ProBoards V5 is better than Xenforo, IPB, etc. They were saying ProBoards V5 is better than any forum software available and that it's the most hi tech or something. It's funny, as most people on ProBoards Support believe them because they have always used ProBoards or other free forum hosts. They have not seen the competition that ProBoards says they're better than.

It makes me laugh, I used to use ProBoards, but ever since I've moved onto other software such as XenForo and vBulletin etc I've never looked back.

Without any doubt, PB is the best free hosted software available. That being said.... I'd run forums on other softwares if I knew how to code the others for custom themes.

Good job catching up PB! Now just get ahead!

Also, I'd say that although PBv5 *might* beat ZB in quality, and ZB MUST do a lot of updates to keep its footing, I doubt it even becoming the best free host.

v5 will best zb, based on what I read on their site. One account for all forums? Notifications of quoted, liked, etc. posts? Yeah, they've got the free hosted area under control if they do that and make it look good. And besides zb updates are so infrequent, it could be 10 years before they even find out about proboards' update. lol.

I saw this the other day on PB and have to say I like it. Brings them alot closer to free software.

Yeah, this is why I said they have to do a lot of updates to keep their footing XD

The plugins system looks nice, I can see some uses for that. Definitely would make it easier for people to install new functions to their forum easier.

But in terms of designing and making proboards look better? Honestly to make proboards really stand out it requires a lot of extra work and a ton of javascript coding (at least based on my last experience with it). And I'd just rather have the option to dive right into the CSS, limit my use of javascript for other things.

Global accounts that one can go either way for me since I'm not exactly sure how this works. Is this one account on all proboards sites? Or is this one master account per site that can be used sign up for more accounts on that site easily? Or what?
I mean honestly, if it's 1 account for all proboards... that I don't like. I like keeping all my accounts separate and distinct (individual passwords so if one gets broken into, they all don't.) Plus what if users don't want to be forced to have this global account? Can they opt out and just use account per site or what? How does that work?

Beyond that, proboards (right now) is a mediocre free host at best. I'm inclined to place it 3rd on my list of hosts (tied with invisionfree). Zetaboards comes in at 2nd and 1st is Jcink Forum Hosting. (JFH has some really nice features, a fair few more than InvisionFree, ZetaBoards or proboards.) We'll see what V5 actually brings when they actually launch it, but I'm not really predicting it's going to change much at all.

Regarding the proboards admin mentality, of course they're going to say their host is best... I mean would you really expect them to say that their host is kinda poor or maybe not as good as the competition? (While it may be the truth and we all can see that, they don't want to admit that since it doesn't exactly inspire confidence.)
Though of course you're always going to have the die-hard loyalists that won't leave and they'll refuse to listen to any criticism about their precious host. Let alone actually try another host... Those kinds of people usually come with every sort of host/service.

I remember the global account vs local account thing back when EZ Boards {remember them?} did that in 1999. The way they did it was you could sign up either for a global account that could be signed in on any EZ boards site, or you could sign up for a local account that worked only on that one forum. You were given the option which one to do {or you could do both} whenever you went to join an EZ board forum.

My memory is hazy on just how they handled the issue of duplicate member names bumping into each other on this system, but it could be handled in a number of ways.

I used Proboards to launch my first forum three years ago. They have come such a long way with what we are going to see in V5. Even though it's great to see them catching up I don't personally see myself going back to Proboards. I'll be sure to try out the new features after the V5 launch though.
