Do you all tolerate spammy homepage links in the profile? Do you all tolerate homepage links that might not be the person's actual personal homepage? Note, I don't mean on this forum, but just on any forum. Should a banning and IP banning be the right choice?

I'd say a homepage link on a profile page is the most tasteful place for a link.

Why would you ban a member for filling out a profile field provided to them that is specifically asking for a homepage link? If you don't want them to use that field, you should disable it.

I don't think banning a person for that is right because it might be a link to just to promote the site. What's the point of banning someone who is not doing any harm. The worst you could do is just give them a friendly reminder and that will stop. That is also over the top. But banning them is going over the top and I expect people to leave your site if you did that. I really don't mind having a homepage link on the profile. Besides you are asking to them to provide them a link there, and if you don't want them too, just remove that bit in the profile section. If it's a spammy one, it would depend on the member, if they are contributing to the site, with good posts, just give them a reminder. But if it's a spammer then ban them. But it would have to depend on a lot of things.

I have it open for them to post on profile but I haven't had any that has posted links. if they did I just remove it and tell them to don't do it again otherwise an warning point will be added to there account.

After 6 or more point there banned.

I do think it's a bit harsh to ban them really. What happens if the link isn't spam? Do you ban them still after 6 points?

I said that option is open for them to post profile and they can post. if it's an advert link then I will remove it and say to them please don't do it. if they do it again they will get one warning point.

after they get all 6 warning points they get banned

Oh OK, do you let people advertise sites in signatures then? I presume not.

If the place becomes a website linking to spam, or if sometimes spam linking to the website, then it risks a lower ranking with search engines.

If the member is clearly a spammer, human or otherwise, they'll be banned regardless due to that. If someone is linking to a site that's not their own, as long as it is not spam, that's fine with me. It could be a friends site, a favorite forum, in relation to the forum's niche, etc.

If I know it's a spam bot, I'll ban them. If it's just a member doing it, I'll delete it and send them a message about it.
