We all know that the "rules" on your forum can be one of the most important things, and also the hardest to write. Seeing as everyone forum is widely different, each community can have far reaching rule sets. On the same note though, every forum has the same heart, which would mean a basic rule template could be applied. Since people around here don't seem to love the idea of "stealing" rules, why don't we all as a group make a single Public Domain rule set that we all can use a "template" per say? New forums could feel safe sticking this on, and can always come back and edit it to suit their own needs down the road. Anyone who wants to help, just post what you think would make a good basic rule, which could apply to almost any forum 🙂

Site Name (hereinafter referred to as "Site Name") provides a platform for people to communicate on, share their thoughts, and build on-line relationships between users. While Site Name tries its fullest to provide this, please note that we cannot be held responsible for the actions of our users. Also note that the posts by our users may not reflect the views or opinions of Site Name. In order to keep our community functioning correctly, we advice that our users stick to the following list of guidelines or face removal from our community.

Reserved Rights;
The owners and staff of Site Name reserve the following rights, and the ability to exercise them at any time, for any reason (including no reason at all).
-Modifying of any data you submit to our servers.
-Suspending your access to our site.

Just keep in mind that if you help out you agree that the rules may be used on any forum, period. None of us will "own" this list, neither will Forum Promotion. It will be Public Domain :great:

How about:

No flaming or bashing other members
No spamming or trolling
No adult content like pornography
Keep all language pg-13
Always respect Admins and Mods

Those are just a few main ones I would always add to my list of rules (thought the language rule doesn't work on all forums)

They should probably be more specific than that. The ambiguity in it isn't useful to moderators. For example, my definition of PG13 language includes the use of words such as "fuck," "shit," and related words. Others aren't the same.

Are you trying to make a universal forum ruleset which resemble licenses like the GPL? I think that would be a great idea but it will never work unless you get some of the bigger guys on phpBB, MyBB, SMF, etc. to join in.

I think as el canadiano mentioned get some rule makers of phpBB or myBB to help out or try talking to people that have made millions of members abide this. You really do want to cover rules that many forums miss out and how do you plan on publishing this if it ever does happen as it would be a great project to work along with but will you publish it as a website with lot's of pre-rule templates or just posting the one set around different major forums?

Feel free to use this bit as you wish:

By registering to [Forum name] you agree to the following rules. Failure to comply to these rules may result in anything from a reprimanding PM to permanent banishment from the forum. Every action you make on this forum signifies a continued acceptance of the rules. You are therefore advised to familiarise yourself with them regularly

Accounts and Registration:

You may only have one account. Registration of multiple accounts will result in a permanent ban on all secondary accounts and a temporary ban on the original. If you create a secondary account to avoid a disciplinary action, all accounts will be banned. In the rare case where you are experiencing technical difficulties, exceptions will be made.

Please choose a username that is appropriate. Inappropriate usernames will be changed by the staff, so use common sense when choosing one.

Under the US Coppa Act, we require all users under the age of 13 to honestly identify themselves upon sign up and provide proof parental consent in order to use this website. [Forum Name] and it's staff are not responsible for the intentional circumvention of this law by underage parties.

I may add more later on, right now I'm too tired/too hungover after last night.
