Promoting A Non-Promotion Forum

So I have had a lot of forums in the past, but they have all been related to forum promoting. I have never really got a forum to take off that was not about forum advertising. It turns out it is harder than it looks. Any tips to promote my football forum? What do you suggest?

This is what I have been doing so far:

Facebook Groups (Posting on the group wall with a link back)
Invited Friends (Told my friends about the forum)

If you post in some popular NFL sites, then you will gain some extra traffic. 😀

Try advertising to football specific forums, or general sport forums as you will gain more targeted traffic compared to the annoying task of posting a topic on every new promotion forum that opens.
