So, I recently heard that promoting your site on other sites actually can be a bad thing. So I wanted to ask, when it comes to making your site better not only in ranking & traffic but also in page rank, is promoting your link on other sites good or bad? Also, do you think google penalizes those who promote their link?

So, for those SEO Experts out there, what are your thoughts and opinions/facts on this?

No, promoting your site is not bad. What is bad is when you start to spam your site, and when your links are not relevant. So you just need to be careful to make sure that you're naturally integrating your link. Now, does this mean that promotion sites are going to get you penalized by Google? Not hardly. The kind of people that get penalized are those who put their link in unrelated areas on tons of websites, especially those that have nothing to do with the promoted website.

So what I am wondering, by simply promoting my link here at FP and other sites, providing quality info about events and new things and such, that would be beneficial to the site?

Also, a question I ask myself, should I have my members help me promote and promote my link or should I? Which would benefit my site more?

And I don't really know the answer to that question really.

I'm not super familiar Jadster with the SEO effect, but I imagine that if you and/or your members are advertising in places that can help attract new members to your forum, the effect must obviously be beneficial. As pandaa said though, as long as you are shoving your link into spots that don't make sense, I don't think it will hurt your SEO.

Forums are meant to be advertised. Like pandaa claimed, don't spam your link on every forum you join. Simply be careful and share the link with others if the forum allows it.

Have your members help promote isn't bad at all. Many of your members come from different active communities, if they simply mention your forum in that other community, that could generate more people from different locations. Though, you should never rely on your members to promote, it isn't their duty.

Look advertising on other websites mean that particular website recommends your links. It shares its traffic with your website and promotes your links. So it is not at all bad promoting your links in other websites. Rather it increases the popularity of your website.

I'd ask permission to post a link on another forum to do otherwise could be perceived as spamming, unless it's a site geared for it such as here, I think it's wrong to expect members to promote the site for you too, that's not their responsibility, however some forums will allow a link exchange...you can put one on theirs as long as you put theirs on yours, this can be a good way to advertise and be beneficial to both parties.

The rule to follow would be if you're providing something that other people would value, you're okay. If you're posting your link in places where other people don't care for your link, that can be sketchy and seems spammy in nature.

No it's not bad. Spamming is (ala posting it where it's not wanted). Blackhat methods are bad (aka getting links from bad neighbourhoods/low quality sites).

But promotion on its own isn't. Otherwise why would Forum Promotion even exist?

if you follow the ad guidelines, then you should be fine. You would want to make a good impression so don't do bad things like PM random members your link to join or start up a ad thread and bump it too often. It's not bad to advertise, but if you do it in the wrong ways, then it's considered to be bad.

I think advertising to make people see your site is a bright light is always good!

No, it's not bad. Peeps have been doing it for yonks!

One of the most popular methods for promoting your site, is via guest posting & contributing to article directories.

The problem occurs when too many people go crazy & start submitting the same, badly spun article to 100's of low quality directories & blog sites.

The trick is to post high quality unique content to a few high authority relevant sites....

It depends on how you promote your site and what your goal is. I would just suggest avoiding spamming it. Choose where you promote your site.

No SEO is not bad. It only held when you make spam or illegal posts for your website. SEO with legal ways is always make good impression on website.
