Hey guys,

We've recently polled this with the staff and we had mixed results. We now want to open this up to the public and gather your input.

The Promotion Directory has good and bad points. We want to know if you guys preferred the old, prefer the new, or prefer something else entirely. Take a second to cast your vote and if you choose either the "Keep the New but with modifications" or "Use the old but with modifications", let us know what modifications to either system you would like to see.

Old system being all topics were in one place
New System being the current system

Thanks!

To clarify:

Old system = used a couple of years ago. All topics were placed in one forum instead of different categories. This makes each topic a lot more visible, particularly for forums which are in a less popular genre. Generally promotes a lot more discussion.

New system = currently used. Makes it easier to find a forum by category, but some of the categories are very inactive now and get little to no attention.

The old system would increase the amount of eyeballs on a given topic, while making it a bit harder to find a forum in a specific genre.

I like the new, but modifications to it would be nice.

Something to divide up the categories more so each is more focused and you know exactly what you're going to find in each one. Instead of mixing Art/Creativity/RP, have an Art section, a Writing/Reading section, a Roleplay section, etc. Instead of combining Tech & Gaming, separate them.

I don't think it matters if a single section is "active" or has lots of topics. To me, I'd rather see fewer topics to better digest the forums in there and view them all. It's a promotion section, not a discussion section, so activity really isn't an issue for me.

I would prefer the new one. I'm use to it and.. it is better if I'm looking for specific sites. There are time where I visit "Web Hosting" to look for free hosting. It is easier by categorizing it.

I actually use the new one because often times I usually look for a particular forum genre (i.e. promotion/advertising). This is a promotion forum so people don't really expect discussion, though as Geoffrey said, a more definable catch-all term for each of the sections would be helpful.

I will not state my option but I voted. I hope for the best with Forum Promotion in the future.

Selected "Old with Modifications". I liked the fact that with the old promotion forum you would see a wide variety of different sites. Sometimes I'd be intrigued and visit them and signup. I don't find myself doing that now that I have to sift through the different categories. The modification I would like is a custom search feature so that you could return results only from sites in "entertainment" or "web hosting" categories for example.

This could be interesting - and would allow for more categories to be added (per my post) without adding lots of subforums.

What I'd like to see is the new method with some modifications.

Firstly, like Geoffrey mentioned, divide up the categories some since some of them are kinda broad and mixed up.

Secondly, to alleviate some issues of people not clicking into topics... maybe it'd be a good idea to have a little banner that, on refresh, would show links to different topics in that section. Maybe show like 3-5 different topics at once so people could see a wider variety relatively easy.

Or have an addon where it would show the last X updated threads or something. (I'm sure there has to be someone around here proficient in PHP to be able to build that. )

I voted "Use the old but with modifications". I think the previous way worked better in terms of getting topics more visible and seen by more users rather than hidden in a subforum where most users would only see the topics in the subforum they have a topic in. The modification I would like to see is the ability for a user to categorize their topic using one of a number of pre-determined attributes. Then have some sort of sort/filter function where a user can select a certain category and only see those forums. By default users would see topics listed from newest to oldest for all topics no matter what attribute is set.

It will be like the promotion directory now but all run from one forum. Kind of taking the best parts of both the new and the old system and putting them together into one in my opinion.

It would require an update to the attributes mod and a bit of custom coding but I don't think it will be a great deal of work.

There are highly stable mods to do this with both IPB and xenForo. If we decide to convert to either of those softwares, this suggestion becomes very simple. I agree that it would also be easy to custom code as well. Overall, I agree with this idea.

The new system looks better: Cleaner and simpler for new members.
