Why do most forums use the word 'forum' but not 'site'? It's been confusing me.

I'm sure it's because it's all about promoting your forum and gaining activity for your forum. Not many forums have a Website promotion section. Most of them allow promotion for forums only. *shrugs*. I hope someone can explain this better?

BUT there are more sites around than forums. Google isn't a forum.

That is very true. Forums are still a fairly new thing to the Internet, are they not? So I don't know why they say promotion sites and not forums, as forums are still very brand new.

Forums are NOT new to the internet 😉 they have been around for a while.

Anyways, a site is usaully a place to visit to get information or to refer too. A forum is a joinable, user engaged site so they prefer 'forum'

New? They date back to mid-90's, and are based on a bulletin board system from the late 70's. It's simply that they're becoming more popular these days since better, and easier-to-use software begins to sprout up.

As for why they're called "Forums", some sites are entirely forum based...and rely completely on forums. And they do have a nice ring to it.

For Promotion forums "Forum Promotion" gets the idea out there much better than "Site Promotion" since FP offers more services for forums.

Why? Because it's a lot easier to offer services to a forum than that of a site that is forumless. You could probably offer reviews for a site, but not much else that wouldn't require administrative access. And that's a great deal of trust. Especially since if a Staff member goes rogue and takes control of something not their's, the Promotion Site could be held responsible.

Well, this place in particular is a forum to promote other places forums and webs, so I don't see it wrong. Maybe I am just to use to the words "Forum" and "Boards".

My logic would be that not all sites have forums and not all forums have sites, which means I don't think a forum = site. For me a site implies that they give content of their own about something and the participation is mostly webmaster-visitors while forums is more of a gathering way where members and staff can equally socialize.

A lot of people don't consider a forum a website hence why they use the word forum instead of site. Also site is a rather generic term as forum is more specific as to what it is.
