It seems most boards these days offer promotion. Even if it's not a promotion board. I have been on a car and movie forum and they have allowed forum advertisement. Do you think only promotion forums should be used for this? Other comments?

I already made a thread about this it annoys me really but i suppose its an excuse for people to join.

It wouldn't be an excuse, but a reason to join 😉

But that wouldnt be the ideal way of getting people to join a car community?

To me, dedicated members are going to stay at my forum whether or not a more active one rolls along, so I don't mind ads at my forum.

Nothing wrong with it what so ever...most forums offer this service, it also stops spaming of pms, and regulates forum activity.

Also, helping out other members with their forums can create positive relationships, thus, potential active members.

Well I don't really care if a forum has one or not, if it does, great but at the end of the day it is the content and what the community itself is like which then makes me decide to join or not.

I don't allow advertising on my forum apart from when I am affiliating with someone else, but they put my banner on there and vise versa but if someone posted an advert on my forum, it would get locked.

Don't care to be honest, more posts = more members = yeahh. So you do what you can to get extra members.

I don't like it. I would never set up such a section on my forum. They are ugly and make you look desperate, to be honest. People can put their site up for advertisement in their signature, and that's it.

We have affiliates but nothing else. It's not a promotion site.

This is a side-effect of the promotion era. See, advertising on a promotion forum such as FP or LT will get you no new members, it isn't designed to do that. The only types of sites other webmasters on promotion forums want to join are sites that allow promotion, free money, ect. That's why so many people do this un-natural thing, to attract more FP users so they don't have to advertise on other places.

Fact of the matter is that promotion forums should be places for webmasters to share ideas and information, not entice each other to join their sites. It's a negative side effect in my eyes.

I don't see it any different to shops offering ads in their windows.

I walk down my local highstreet at people advertise their goods and services - like old furniture - even in the butchers.

Don't see how a "plug your own website" board in a non-promotion forum is any different to that, just a place where the community can share their own stuff!
