With a recent event of one of my friends being killed in a DUI (victim) on August 13th, and the suspect being arrested on his SEVENTH DUI, the topic of addiction is brought up. What are your thoughts on the psychology behind addiction? It’s wild how the brain can get hooked on substances or even behaviors like gaming. Some see it as a personal failing, while others point to biology and environment as big drivers. How do you view what pulls people into addiction? Do you believe that addiction turns into a disease or simply continues to be a choice?

I got addicted to a controlled substance (clonazepam) from my therapist and I purposely went cold turkey. The withdrawal symptoms were horrible. I was sick with vertigo for weeks. Which leads me to believe that many addicts can stop, they just don't want to for psychological reasons related to trauma or past abuse.

I've also dealt with past porn addiction and I didn't quit largely due to not wanting to quit. I knew I had an issue, but didn't care. I just kinda embraced it. As I've gotten older and closer to my 40's, I haven't been near as bad. I used to really enjoy that dopamine rush that your body releases when you climax. Because it would help me sleep and the fact that it was calming. I never really saw it as an addiction, but I guess that it counts.
