What do you typically do when two members are publicly arguing?

Hide the posts and tell the members etc.

If it has getting quite heated then I'd hide the posts from public view and PM both of them just informing them that it's not allowed, what they were doing and have done with it. Most 'fights' that users get into a from silly disagreements that don't usually have any point behind them.

I would keep the topic unlocked and viewable to all as it is their fault then I would add a post telling them to stop or they get banned. That way members know that if they end up doing it they might get banned.

I'd hide the posts, then warn them about it. If it continues, I'll probably hand out 1 week bans to both of them.

I'd also probably try to do something to prevent arguments like that from happening again.

Here's what I have done:

1. Split off any posts containing the altercation.

2. Merge them all together into one topic.

3. Place the new topic in the area that only those in conflict can see.

4. Place the arguing members in a special group that only has access to that area.

5. Explain to both members that:

  • They aren't in trouble.
  • What is said in that area, stays in that area. (If not, then they'll both be warned.)
  • Why they are in the group they're in, and why they can only access the conflict and rules sections.
  • What that area is for.
  • Tell them that this will be their last chance to resolve it without warning or suspension. Or, if they choose, they can just skip this step and be suspended.

6. Let them each explain their side of the story and clear the air amongst themselves in a frequently moderated area.

7. Say a few final words, lock the topic and move it to an area where resolved conflicts are stored (for privacy) and then reinstate the [formerly conflicted] members back to their original group.

It keeps the argument off of the forum, so that it won't be brought down by the negativity, gives them both the chance to tell their side of the story, it gives them a chance to clear the air, without the intervention of "witnesses" or people fanning the flames, and resolve the issue themselves without punishment. That area is pretty much their last chance to resolve it, or they can both be suspended.

It has worked very well for the times there were arguments amongst the kids on my brother's forum. I haven't had to worry about this on my forum as most of the people there are adults.

I like to keep it simple, and delete the posts, and let them both cool off for a few days with a suspension or some thing close to that.

I'd put the topic in a secret forum, review what is going on and sort out the dispute. I would leave the topic hidden, however.

What if it's your own mods or staff arguing with each other? What do you do then?

I mean it could possibly happen.

If members on my forum are arguing, we'll let lit slide to a point. If it starts getting ugly then members are asked to calm down or topic will be locked or removed. If it spreads out into other topics then its time to have a PM convo with involved members.

Members of staff act as an example to other members, hence their behaviour should be of an even higher standard than that of your members. If they are arguing in public it reflects badly on your forum and they need to be immediately told to stop doing it. Just don't get over zealous and recognise that there is a difference between an argument and a discussion.

I couldn't disagree more. The phrase 'praise in public, criticise in private" springs to mind. No one likes to be embarrassed in fron of other people, in real life or on a forum.

I would move them to the deleted forums and simply PM them saying next time there will be a problem.

After all, there are more important things in life!

Join in? :L

Probably just delete the posts and let the users know they've gotta take it to PMs.

If they do not want to be looked upon bad or embarrassed they would stop and demand the topic to be either locked or moved.

We've never had this situation as of yet, but if it did happen, we'd probably trash the topic in question and ask the offending parties to please talk it out among themselves via Private Message or email. Or they can always PM either myself, Ashley.S. or Kevin, depending on the sort of argument going on, and we will gladly assist that person in anyway we can.

I'd let it go until they start flaming each other. Seriously, arguments are good for forums sometimes. However, when they start personally attacking each other, I'd hand out the punishments and explain why they were punished. I'd then either close the topic or remove the posts.

If they're not attacking each other and just having a constructive conversation while disagreeing on something, I'd let it go.

People have arguments. To say you never had one is to be lying to yourself. The truth is the argument has to stem from somewhere and to simply bury it is no different then spilling something on a carpet then taking a towel and throwing that on top of it and saying it's clean. It's best to deal with such issues which cause the argument to occur early rather then burying them till they explode into something you can't control. If it went public then it needs to be dealt with in public view so all can be happy and leave it in the past where it will stay.
