Looking through Languavel, I notice right off that you have a well put together forum index. This may not sound like a huge part of a forum, but from my experience, most forum owners tend to disregard: forum descriptions, forum names, and number of categories. Descriptions tend to make a forum look fuller, interesting names make a forum more inviting, and keeping the amount of categories lower stops a forum from looking cluttered.
[Activity]
It appears as if Languavel is doing fine in the activity department. Not only are your stats decent, it appears as if your activity is spread between several active members including staff and members alike. Find ways to keep your current member base active and growth will follow.
Weaknesses:
[Clutter]
So, one of the strengths is the forum index. However, the mass of clutter surrounding the forum index detracts from the overall appeal I believe your forum has to offer. Try reducing the number of recent posts to show, centering the forum index and making the recent posts bar to the right as a widget, or perhaps make the latest posts bar a minimizing/maximizing feature that’s easily opened or closed from the side rather than vertical. Also, in the top banner on the right side, the menu options need to be on one line. As of now, they appear to visitors like this: http://prntscr.com/57glon which I feel elongates the overall look of the forum and makes it a bit more a nuisance to scroll through.
[Theme]
This is perhaps a pet peeve of my own so take it as you will. I feel the theme is rather simplistic and overused. Blues on whites is just an all too generic choice for forums now a days especially MyBB forums. Perhaps try a red on white or Orange on white? Red/orange/yellow are colors that catch an eye and looking at the genre of your forum (languages), a warm color would be much more inviting.
Final Remarks:
Languavel is definitely a forum with potential, however, it’s up to you as a forum owner to tap into its potential. I feel a forum based around language is a unique niche to get into and one that is relevant to a lot of people. As a future educator, I want to learn Mandarin to help when I get foreign students so your forum is actually one I may use in the future. The only thing truly holding me back are more aesthetic issues as they are what make or break a forum for me. Work on, or at least consider, what I’ve said and you should be good!
Kudos on what you have so far, I’m an incredibly hard person to impress (the current staff team can attest to this) and I feel Languavel can possibly go somewhere with enough dedication.
