Hello, vB users!

For the most part, many vB admins are still running their forum(s) with the default vBulletin copyright. This is a bad idea. While you cannot remove the copyright without a branding fee license, you can slightly modify it.

A standard copyright for vB looks like this:
Powered by vBulletin® Version 3.8.4
Copyright ©2000 - 2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
Notice the version number after the ® mark. This gets indexed in Google along with everything else you allow Google to see, and will show up in Google search results. Hackers often search Google for the copyright tag for certain versions of vBulletin that have known exploits. Basically, you're putting a homing beacon on your site for potential hackers.

To edit the copyright, without violating your terms of service, simply log into your Admin Control Panel, and scroll down to Languages and Phrases. Search in phrases for "vBulletin." The phrase you should look for is "powered_by_vbulletin." Click the edit button.

The Standard text for this phrase is:
Powered by vBulletin&reg; Version {1}<br />Copyright &copy;2000 - {2}, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
Copy and post this into the translation box below, and remove "Version {1}." That's it! You now have a legit vBulletin copyright that meets Jelsoft's requirements, without displaying the version you are running. Hope you found this little tidbit useful 🙂

Thanks for the great VB tip, I've just done it on both of my live VB forums. This should help VB forum owners to keep at least some hackers away.

Thanks for this. I just wanted to sign up to say this is really useful.

Already knew this and have been using it since I bought vB, but great tip nonetheless.
