Would you guys recommend phpBB or vbulletin... From my research it seems that all of the "Big Boards" are using vbulletin. I'm just worried that i'm going to spend the money and end up failing at becoming a competitor.

My current forum: http://www.gdgforums.com

Feedback/critiques would also be helpful. I'm very new to the scene.

Well, Vbulletin is well worth the money...
But you should start at phpbb or mybb, if your new to managing forums. If your not new at managing forums, then I'd go for vBulletin.

I currently own Vbulletin and the other big forum IPB. Both are worth the money. I have been dealing with forums for over 7 years. But if your new to foruming, I suggest stick to free forums for now.

I suggest that you use phpBB forum software for that forum. If you end up buying a vB license to use vB forum software on your forum, then you'd want to sell the license in the future like other forum owners that doesn't develop their forums well ( no offense ) , unless you plan to use it for a forum that would get people's attention, 😉

I would suggest you to go for VB, it is certainly worth.

But you are not sure about your project start with free software.

G!

How dedicated can you be? I started with phpBB on one of my sites, hated it, moved to MyBB, loved it then decided in the end to move to vBulletin.

I love vBulletin but if you don't have money coming out of your ears start with something small and consider upgrading when you are ready

They both have there ups and downs. Like everyone else said, if your new to all the managing forums bit, stick to free just incase it doesnt work out.

Better be safe then sorry 🙂

I dont understand wtf your saying here lol... Either you're a complete flaming idiot or I'm reading that entire post wrong.

From my experience there is nothing vBulletin does that PHPbb doesn't (From a user point of view) so in my opinion go with the free one. 🙂

Unless you have vBSEO, there isn't much that vBulletin can offer that phpBB can't. Honestly, I wouldn't go with vBulletin in any situation. Their support refuses to give you support if you apply hacks (MODs) to your forum, blaming things on the hack author, and they constantly price hike.

I can't really say I'm a fan of phpBB, but at least they don't screw their customers over like vBulletin did.

I'd say vB. But if you dont have the $195, I'd recommend IPB which is wayy cheaper and only goes for $145. If you still dont have enough, go with PhpBB.

If you're willing to spend the money, get vB. Since your forum is small, I'd recommend phpBB so you don't waste your money if your forum ends up failing.
