Basic Review of Referral Directory

On first glance at the website, the first thing I notice is the logo, design, and colors. While the design and colors are great, the logo needs some work, but I will cover that later in the review. I also noticed that activity is lacking in some areas. For example, one board hasn't had a post made since June of last year. That can be a major turn-off to newcomers.

Honestly, the site structure seems pretty sound. I feel as though the categories and boards are in the proper order and the proper places. The navigation is easy to find and easy to follow. Though, that said, I almost missed the links at the bottom of the forum. One thing that I would suggest is moving the affiliates section at the bottom of the forum, below the information center. However, that's just my personal preference. It does seem a little "out of place" where you currently have it.

As I stated, in my "First Impressions," I like the overall design of your forum. I like the fact that you have several color schemes for the site as well.
The biggest, most important, issue that I have with your forum is the logo. I love the icon you chose to use for the "referral" part (wallet with the money) that is original, and I wouldn't have thought to do that myself.

The problem with it is the text. It looks like you tried to do something similar to an "engrave" effect on the main text, which is cool. I don't mind that, but as you switch through the different color schemes to the purple one, the purple color kind of takes over and makes the text and wallet harder to see.

The subtext is bad all the way around. The subtext I'm referring to is the "slogan," or the text underneath the main text. For one, it should be in a different font. The text it too small to use the same font from the main text. Next, the color is horrid. It's not a bad color, but with all the theme color choices you have, it looks bad on each one and is hard to read. The only two it even remotely looks good on are the yellow one and the gray one. However, with the gray one, it's too hard to read because it blends into the background too much.

Another thing I'd like to add is that one of the affiliate images aren't working. I think you should remove that one or find an updated image for it, so it doesn't stand out so badly. Having broken images appear on the main page of any forum or website is never a good thing.

Honestly, the only thing "original" about your forum is the logo and maybe the design. You have all the same boards as any other promotional forum out there. You provide the same type of content and haven't brought anything new to your site that would attract visitors nor bring back old members who are no longer active.

There are hundreds of promotion forums out there today, and it's important that you have original content and discussion areas for your members. Offer something that no other promotion forum ever has and come up with unique ideas to get your members active in the community.

Overall Mark: (32.5 out of 60)
Take some time to work on your logo so that it blends well and works well with each of the different color schemes your site currently has. Work on bringing new and original content and boards to your forum to get your current members--and potential members--to want to take part in your community. Overall, I like the forum; it just needs some work. I hope you find my criticism helpful in some ways and I hope my suggestions help your forum succeed should you choose to use them. Good Luck!

Just a quick few comments for you Infected.

1) I would change the gray text in your banner into something a tad darker or maybe give an outline in a darker color to make the text a little more crisp. It will held make the text more legible.

2) I don't see a favicon being used on your site. Sometimes my Google Chrome goes haywire and you might have one and I just don't see it. It becomes useful when bookmarking pages as you get to see what is what and you can tell just from the favicons. Just something to consider.

3) I really like the color changer on the style. Adds a little uniqueness, but still keeps the originality of your site. Good job. 🙂

I'm only a staff member their, not the owner. I will pass this information on to the administrative team. Thank you for the honest feedback though!

Was the forum sold or just given to the new owner? The forum was highly inactive before and it was sad to see. It's much better now with a lot of the forums being posted in recently. It's good to see. I would suggest maybe changing the theme as it's a bit bland and boring to look at.

It was sold. The rest of the staff and I are doing our best to try to get in active again and we are actually looking for a new theme, I just haven't found many good ones yet.

Advanced Review of Referral Directory

First Impressions: (7 out of 10)
When I first visited the forum recently, I found out that the forum had a nice change of theme. I like the theme change myself. I know I wouldn't have stayed too long on a forum that had the particular blend of orange and black that the previous theme had. Though I noticed you still have the older theme. I guess for those who liked it, could still use it if they want to.

I also noticed that your forum has a large number of your boards filled in pretty good with topics. Sure aren't lacking there for most of the forum, but the service boards are giving me the eye, with the little amount of topics in them.

As I started browsing the forum, I noticed that Devin has quite the signature size. I know that I personally don't like having to read past large signatures, unless I have to. And I know that with the size of his signature, if he posts more than a few times in a thread, that will create a massive page to scroll down. His own signature is 330px in height, and having that shown just four times, adds 1,320 px to the amount that you have to see, in order to get to other posts in a topic, which causes issues with those who have smaller screens (those with tablets, and small screens for their computers and laptops). If you can convince him to remove 1 of the two leaderboard ads there, or remove some of the extra text lines, that will reduce the amount of scrolling by enough, to not have to annoy people.

number%20of%20posts.png
Number of Posts & Members: (4 out of 10)
The forum has a pretty good amount of posts and members on it, but is obviously not active enough to draw atleast half of them to the forum.

Also, I noticed that the forum had went through around a half a year, before going from 5,000 posts, to 8,000 posts, when the forum had obviously went up quickly in the other post milestones in comparison. You need to get your members to want to come on and talk more, so that your numbers looks better.

I never have seen a forum that old, only receive roughly 5 posts per thread, from a member base that large. Try getting a reward post competition going, or some sort of competition that will help people to come back and visit more often.

activity.png
Activity Level: (4 out of 10)
As I mentioned above, you need to really get kickstarted in getting the forum active. It is a shame to have a forum like yours, have only 8,000 posts at it's age. One expects it to have gotten way over 10,000 by now, if it was still as active as it was a number of months ago.

Try sending out reminders to your memberbase, of what is happening on the forum, and to encourage them to visit.

Also, try to get your services to have more requests, as that will help with your overall activity that you need in the long run. The more that those services are used, the easier it will be to retain visitors who want to use those services.

Also, get some of those boards that have less than 100 topics, to have some fresh topics to reply to. Try to make them interesting too! That will eventually help with bringing back the activity the forum so desperately needs.

site%20structure.png
Site Structure: (10 out of 20)
Where are you focusing the forum on in particular? Is it services first, then discussion, or what? Since it reminds me somewhat of FP atleast, in the order of how things are displayed. Don't get me wrong, but I would have expected the Site Battles board, to not be with the webmaster discussion board, and the webmaster discussion to be a little bit more expanded, since that single board makes it look like you don't want to have much of anything about being a webmaster being discussed on the forum. Try moving a few boards around, and adding a few boards to your webmaster category, as that may help better increase your current post count.

Design Quality: (18 out of 20)
I personally love the design! I love how the social buttons are at the top of the page, and how the colors tend to blend so well!

originality%2016x16.png
Originality: (8 out of 15)
In all seriousness, the only two things that seem to be unique on the forum, is the graphics request service board, and the SEO Service request board. If you expand your RD service board a little more, offering more unique items that don't require their own individual board, I would give this a better rating next time around. 🙂

spelling%20grammar%20professionalism.png
Spelling, Grammar & Professionalism: (9 out of 15)
Try expanding your board descriptions a little more, so that it appears as if you put thought into what is on the forum. 🙂 I also suggest making a height limit in signatures, so that people don't get annoyed at staff or members who have large signatures. As that tends to be rather annoying for most people.

Thing you liked best about forum: The Theme
Thing you liked least about forum: Big Signature Ad space on a couple of your member's signatures.

Overall Mark: (60 out of 100)
I am hoping that if you take a few things of the above into consideration, you may have a better forum yet! Good luck!
