Referral systems for promotion

Do you have a referral system on your forum or website that is used to help gain traffic? Is it effective?

I personally think that a referral system will only work if you have good measures to prevent duplicate accounts as one can easily create another account as their referral. Also, people will only refer members if there is some benefit for doing so such as a referral competition or some sort of prize per referral.

I think referrals can be quite effective if the right rewards system is in place and you make the whole referral system easy. We were getting an OK number of referred clients at holderhost but we need to put more effort into helping our affiliates. I've been getting Plato to create a bunch of new banners for affiliates to match the new theme which is to be released and am also going to make it easier for affiliates to see payout rates.

Manual fraud checks can be quite effective at finding duplicate accounts.

Yes actually; however I don't really have an awards set up. It's more of a bragging right among members than anything; like "haha I referred more people than you" kind of thing, and the competition just grows continuously. 😛

And finding duplicate accounts is fairly easy, myBB has a way of doing that within a few clicks and then I go in and edit their referrals just to keep it fair. 😛

A referral program is one good way of promoting your forum in getting new members. However, be aware that a referral program involves money otherwise it will not be attractive. And if the referrals are too many, you might go bankrupt unless the revenue of your site is more than the expenses that you incur. I know of some sites that give good rewards for referrals such that members continue to find new referrals and the growth is fast in terms of membership.

Most forum based software already have them built into the system that links to each members account then they can pick what options to use to add in there sig or other websites. As for me I don't have any awards for them to give if they wanted to do it

Its a tough question actually. Though it might not be a very effective means of advertisement, I think that even if it brings a little traffic, its important and should be explored further.

Yes, referrals are really helpful if you want to promote your business online. Through referral programs, you can easily get more clients for increasing your business services.

If you are giving rewards for referral sign-ups, this will really work. If there is no reward, members would not even bother to promote referral links.

I think with how more people are on xenforo, or there is similar coding on other programs, it could be a cool badge earned at the very least! Definitely agree with you - rewards make it worth while to people.
