Have you ever decided to rehire forum staff members whom you had previously fired or demoted? Was there any lingering hard feelings from the staffer after they returned to post? Did you end up demoting them again for the same reason as the first time? What was the results?
I actually recently did this, I had to demote a staff member because of his activity and not notifying anyone that he was going to be gone. To be fair I PMed all staff about activity several times and posted a thread in the staff board that each member of my team had to post in to acknowledge that they read it. When the member was demoted, the very next day he got online to find out he was demoted. We discussed things, and he came back onto our team. I guess we'll see how it goes, though he has let us know that he's busy with school at the moment but he at least checks in daily now.
I rehired someone that was demoted for inactivity once. They said they'd be more active and I figured I'd give them a chance to show it. They lasted like 3 days before they vanished again (they signed on for 3 days after saying they'd be more active, but then after that third day they vanished again). So this time I waited about half the regular time (regular time is a month) and demoted them again.
I had no hard feelings towards them. I just didn't expect much from them. If they had stuck around and done what was asked? I'd have been pleasantly surprised. Though that didn't happen. And if they would have asked again after being demoted the second time I would have just told them no.
Here's my take... If they're communicating with me and let me know what's going on. Like say they're hired and working, but then something comes up and they need to step down, I don't mind rehiring them. And if something else comes up and they have to step down again? Again, so long as they communicated to me I'd rehire them. And so long as they keep letting me know I wouldn't have an issue with rehiring them when the time comes.
But if they just vanish with no indication or communication? I'll give 2-3 chances depending on how well they worked. After that then I'm done since they've established they can't communicate to me and they aren't capable of being staff.
If it's inactivity then I think it's understandable to re-promote them cause life happens. If it's for other reasons, I would be much more hesitant to rehire them again.
I guess I can understand if it is because of life getting busy. I can make exceptions after being sure that they are once again active around. But for other reasons I think it is close to no possibility of getting back since I'm sure it will be serious cases to earn firing or demotion in the first place.
I have demoted staff at times do to inactivity and when they became a little more active, and realized they were no longer staff, they would contact me. If the response was mature and respectful, I had no problems giving them another opportunity.
However, there's been times that people have gone inactive and when they learned of not being staff anymore they would be very disrespectful and make excuses as to why they were not active. To me, it doesn't matter what your excuse is, especially when you start disrespecting me before asking politely for your position back.
If someone's going to demand they get the staff position back and be rude about it, that's where you draw the line and make sure that person doesn't become staff again. Because the way they're acting, is just fuel for them to try and sabotage your forum.
Depending on the powers you give them, it could mean destruction of your forum or a big headache. Its best just to avoid those people altogether.
