I'm curious on your guys's thoughts on rejecting staff apps. What if someone is 'qualified' as far as their work goes (Say it's a writing forum, design forum, etc.) but their attitude, personality, or english skills or something else prevents them from really being on your team. What's the best way to reject someone without destroying a future relationship. Maybe they're not ready right now, but in the future they'd make a good staff member.

I think this is probably the worst thing that could happen, and for me it usually happens quite a lot.

Sometimes I will tell them straight up, that their english skills are not up to par or their attitude is not fit for the position, however I always have their application open as long as they try to improve on what I had mentioned. If they are no longer interested in a staff position then I usually just close the application since there is no use in having it when they are not interested. 😛

With that said though, I think it's important to weigh your priorities when you are hiring, because no one will be the perfect person you are looking for, they will always have their flaws. Like me, when drafting things or planning things I tend to leave important things out and then suddenly have a blonde moment and I remember to have it, or I overlook things rather easily. I also happen to be too talkative and "flamboyant" and it annoys the crumbs out of people. 😛

So yeah, you will have flaws and unless you get the rare chance of hiring someone that is everything you are looking for, you will have to constantly weigh how important grammar skills is for the position, and how important their attitude or other characteristics are to that position, and then go from there.

One thing that I will never "weigh" because it's almost vital for position in my opinion, is attitude. Hiring someone with a horrible or "mean" attitude will just result in chaos on the forum, and I would rather not talk to a never-caring and hostile person, you know? Attitude is something that can be changed, personality is something that comes with the staff member.

I also want to say how they speak in their application will be how they speak throughout the forum, so if their application is so boring you could fall asleep, then chances are they are going to be boring everywhere else.

I often have been rejected and I don't care. I think its equal though seeing as I've turned down multiple offers on other forums.

Staff isn't for me anymore. I guess I've come to view it in a pessimistic manner.

All it is to me is more privileges and a colorful user name. I've known for quite a long time that staff is almost always temporary aside from the owner of the forum.

You take the forum as far as you can in your own way and make some sort of difference and than when you've had enough, you step down or get demoted for whatever reason and that's the end of your term.

Its okay, but it gets tiring. Sometimes being just a member and not having to worry about anything and do your own thing, deal with your personal life is what really matters. Get and go at your own pace. Nothing wrong there.

If you're not a good staff member or your application doesn't show that you put more than a couple seconds into it, I'm not going to hire you no matter how desperate the forum is for a staff member. Quality over quantity and all that jazz.
