Adsense, Adbrite, Donations, Amazon Affiliates, selling real or digital files or memberships, and selling links are a good way to start making money.

You need traffic and content on your forum to attract people who click links they are interested in.

You don't. I do believe that you are not allowed to put your own advertisements up on Proboards. And I'm certain of it with Zetaboards, due to my reading of their TOS awhile back.

Got to spend money to make money.

You can put advertisements on ProBoards, but you can't use Google Adsense unless your ad-free because the advertisements already on ProBoards are Google Adsense, and Google has rules or whatever about having multiple accounts to one website.

For the free ones I used to have a redirect forum, and sold/traded for that spot.

You can place ads, depending on the forum software you select you can also find mods/plugins that allow to place ads.

You can use Affiliate Text links which have your affiliate member name in the link, and every time someone buys something from the affiliate link you make a percentage of the earnings or you can post "Sponsored Posts" where you pin a post to the top of your forum section which a customer paid to have pinned to the top of your forum.

I made a little bit of money from Affiliate links, and sponsored posts on my blog in the past. I read if you get a lot of traffic to your forum or blog, people will pay more for sponsored posts.

I used to sell memberships that had increased perks compared to regular accounts on my old forum. On top of that, there were also advertisements.

I'm using that too on one of my site, works pretty well.

Other than that, revenue from from a website for me is mainly from ads.
