$20 to rent an early access movie instead of going to the movie theater...is this the future? I can already imagine myself telling my future grandchildren "back in my day we used to pay $8 to catch a matinee and share a room with 50 other people to watch a movie"

We used to rent VHS and I'll date myself by saying Beta video tapes too from a video store to watch movies at home 😀 They weren't the ones that were early release or even the ones still out at the theater but it was the thing to do back in the 80s and 90s.

I doubt I would pay more to watch a movie on early release since I am patient enough to wait for it to come out on Netflix or Amazon Prime. Most movies these days aren't very good anyway so I don't have high expectations.

Movie centers in our area are plagued by maniacs. They are harmless, but does enough to ruin the calm atmosphere of a cinema hall. It is hard to enjoy a movie when compared to the calm atmosphere we have in our personal space.

How can it be better?
Get to watch a new movie in my own environment without dealing with other people? Pause when you want? Not pay overpriced concessions? Not have to worry about finding seats or sitting beside big Larry who sweats out his ass and smells like a sewer?

It’s better.

And I agree lol like to think it better but how you pointed it out it's just not better in anyway but being at home with your 10K setup that we all wish

This is possible only if early would be more expensive than tickets. Most money movies earn in cinemas. Also there are contracts between cinemas, Coca Cola and movie studios.

Personally, I'm not going to pay $20 to rent a movie. That's insane. I'd pay $20 for a ticket at a movie theater every once in a while, just to have the "movie theater experience." I'm definitely not paying $20 to stream a movie rental though. I don't really see that being the future, but I'm sure that we will continue to see major movies being released in theaters and 1-2 different streaming services with some kind of exclusive rights deal.

I think theres pros and cons to Theater vs Home.
At the Theater, it feels like a special occasion because youre Going to see it, though maybe I'm just a supreme shut-in. You also get the popcorn, crappy nachos, and the experience of sneaking in everything else. Though as a con, the 8 dollar matinee adds up if you want Any food during the movie, which I always do.
At home it may not feel as special, but its at your own time, there's no rules to talking or what food you can have, and like other people have stated you can pause to go to the bathroom.
I feel though that theres the additional point in favor of theaters that there's too many streaming services to buy things on to make any sense. If I want to pay 20 dollars to watch something on my own time whenever I want, I'm buying a DVD and owning the movie myself instead of paying for a service to let me watch it.

I used to rent from Movie Gallery and then order a pizza from Dominoes to take home. Now I just buy all of my movies on Blu Ray or stream movies on Hulu and Netflix.

Mostly for me now when I rent films that I check out the rent deals and see if there are any good films worth watching that's only £1.99 on amazon. Evening renting films are not cheap.

I’m thankful for streaming services because if I’m going to spend $20 for a movie and it’s a one time, I’d rather go out with friends to a theater and enjoy time together, or spend the $20 and buy it to watch whenever.

It sure was. I really miss Movie Gallery. My parents would rent VHS & DVD from there all of the time along with takeout from Dominoes' Pizza. Those were the days. Too bad they went out of business.

Unless YOU, the viewer, have a room SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED for home theater. There are some people who have them, but to get that home theater experience, its gonna cost you thousands to do it.

Until that point... there is NO better way to watch something like John Wick 4, than the theatres.

that's a dream that we all never going to have as that would cost way to much

Having a subscription has just killed movie rentals to be honest.

But like people have said above me, you can't beat a cinema experience.

I rent movies sometimes through the xbox. Really I try to use streaming services that have the things I'd want to rent though. I have set up my living room with a good sound system so I could enjoy movies more at home. I miss the theater experience sometimes, but I really love getting to hit pause.
