Do you have a reputation system on your forum? I feel it is a good idea as it allows members to collaborate with the aims to acheive a positive score and lets other users see the trustworthiness of other members in things like exchanges 🙂

Yes indeed I know, It's already built into the system on my website and my members like it,

I also like it myself

NO! lol.

It's a terrible idea XD. This never worked for our community. It seems to work fine here, but I think it really depends on the sort of members you have. Sites like this attract forum owners, people who are interested in upkeeping a site, so they aren't going to troll this one. When we had a rep system it was trolled to death. People were crying about unfair neg rep. On vBulletin, mods could only edit rep comments, they couldn't remove negative rep, so admins had to fix it and there was no way to give that power to mods. Too much hassle on such a large website, so we got rid of it. People asked for it on the new forum and we were like "NO!"

Yeah, it depends on your memberbase a lot. That, however, is true with most anything. 😛

Some sort of "like" system is a must for any forum. Although - I really don't think it matters whatsoever what type it is. The old rep system that FP used to have on phpBB was almost never used, but the "like" system is pretty active nowdays.

@Kronos: Yes on the new Xenforo site, we have the like system since it came with the package anyway. That one works perfectly since it's not possible to troll lol.

When we got rid of the rep system on the vBulletin, we tried out an upvote/downvote system on posts. If it got more than x number of downvotes, the post would be collapsed. Our intention was to try and improve post quality on the site. Since many members complained about spamming in threads, we thought it would be a good solution and it would spare us the reputation (lovingly known as "e-peen") headache. Guess what? They followed one of our admins and mass downvoted every one of his posts. Admin posts couldn't be hidden anyway, but it led us to the conclusion "Yep, this doesn't work either." I have to admit that I did laugh and it still makes me giggle. We told them they can't have nice things if they break them. :hilarious:

The new site was of course born out of that one with many of the same members who made the move with us, so we're a little hesitant to give them fuel to be silly. XD

Definitely the reputation system is the way to go, especially if the users of the forum will trade/buy/sell services.

Reputation only makes sense in service forums such as this. Otherwise it's just a popularity contest.

There is a reputation system on my forum (with positive, negative, neutral ratings) but more commonly used is the likes and thanks sytem. It is easier to recognize individual posts/threads than a whole rating grouping in my opinion.

I will actually second your opinion. I think that reputation system are only required in those forums that offer a service. Otherwise its just a source of headache and not really a essential part of a forum environment.

Reputation and like/dislike systems for the most part just devolves into a popularity contest and being popular and being good can and usually are two entirely different things. I am not a fan of them and never had them on any forum I was a founder of in the past.

If you want to know the quality of a person then you go into their posts to see who they are and with it as a bunch of rating numbers doesn't always give a clear picture of who a person is in regards to their character.

I love rep systems, but I don't own any forum anymore. I used to have it on all my forums as it is a great way to keep a record of helping people and the ones that are just there.

I don't like it when they give an thumbs down

Nah you just post the positive rank, and then you have people with 0-5 rep that are new, 5-25 that are new actives and around 50 rep + are those guys who are staff and highly active members.
Negatives just ruin your forum, hence facebook doesn't have a dislike button.

also some forums to that can have the dislike disabled
Most smart ones do due to the positive affect of the community it has when there isn't a dislike/bad reputation button. Well we got finally to psychology when it comes to forum managing xD
