When a member approaches you and asks if you can delete their account. Do you honor their request? Why or why not?

I ask why and then I do it anyway. I just try to get a reason why so that I know what I can improve upon. I'm always looking for ways to improve, no one is ever perfect.

I have this as an option on everyone’s user control panel. They can even pull down a full GDPR file report if they want which contains everything in the database on them (excluded is analytics because I have them vague enough to where it’s not a GDPR issue). It takes 7 days from the request for them to put in before the software automatically closed their account (and renames it).

I had that happen to me once, a while ago in fact. I was a little shocked by my system and I didn't even know how to answer the person Xd. What made it worse was that the member was an old informal staff member. He was fine about it but he wanted his name and everything removed as he was a very very private person.

I said that in the site policy you can't have your account removed, GDPR at the time was not enforced but it was coming. Said that content will bb removed also with your account deletion and he did not care one little bit that it can impact a very small site.

End results that his account was removed/deleted and the content wasn't 🙂 But then months after he join up again XD

I have it where members can delete their own accounts. However if I did change it where they couldn't, I would ask if there was a reason like @DudeThatsErin to see if there maybe was a member bothering them, they had trouble accessing the forum, etc. If I can fix it, I will do my best if they are willing. Otherwise if they want to leave, I would in no way make them stay.

I used to not allow it. Now I allow it with the term that they may not create another account for at least 365-days starting on the day the account was created. This helps to curb drama from those who want to keep rejoining and deleting, rejoining and deleting.

Delete the user but their content remains on the forum. I believe XenForo just renames them to "Delete Member" and adds a number to the end of it.

I‘ll start off by trying to see if there is an issue that can be solved. Then I‘ll give them a week to potentially change their minds, before I delete both their account as well as posts (if they wish that). I believe se as more indie webmasters than the bigger fish online should strive for letting our users be in control of the content they produce via our sites.

I'll process account deletion requests in accordance with the UK's ICO right to erasure regulations. However I also make it very clear on my forums that it is a non-reversible process and to reverse that process would be a breach of the regulations.

From what I recall, on the forums I own, that's resulted in every request being retracted. On the forums I admin members almost always want their account reinstated. This should be avoided because if their account has been properly anonymized it shouldn't be possible to reconcile the request with the account.

In New Zealand it's a crime not to honour the requests to delete the user name and data. The also have a right to view any data you hold on them. You do have a right to ask them why but once deleted that information can be stored but must not have any link to them

If the member has received some sort of compensation (cash for posting, for example), I don't delete the account.

That's interesting, something I've not considered. I wonder if that scenario is even covered by GDPR or the equivalent.

I have a couple of members on my forum who receive cash for posting. When I hired them, I made it clear that their posts remain on the site, and their accounts cannot be deleted. I don't know all the clauses of GDPR.

Paid to post on forums are different as you are paying them for cash to be there, what's the point paying people to post to have all there content removed XD

I am strict about deletion.

I will not delete accounts unless its spam. And sometimes I leave the spam account alone, so I can annoy the spammer. There are features in xenForo that allows me to.

Before GDPR, when people approached me to delete his/her account, I would delete it. Seems innocent. Like, normal. But after GDPR, I've had many different kinds of attitudes.

Sometimes its the innocent people legitimately trying to remove their accounts.

Sometimes it's a long-time user of the forums, in which case, I don't typically do. What if the user comes back and regrets deleting his posts or profile attached to his posts?

I just ban the account, and tell the user to let me know when he wants to come back.

Sometimes, its a long-time user by join date, and has zero posts? I'll delete it.

Hell, I periodically purge the zero posters every 3 years.

But I do get jerks. Trolls.

In which case I ban the account(s) so they don’t come back and re-do the scam. Re-do the case. You have no idea the kind of bullshit I had to go through with GDPR.

I'd never delete a user's account unless it was made to spam the forum. If they just didn't want to participate anymore than they can just leave and not come back.
