I was thinking about doing this the other day, but I have a few questions. Firstly, is there any one free script that stands out as the best to use for this? Or do you have to make ftp accounts for every member you get? Im thinking about offering it free, as I really have more space and bandwidth than I know what to do with (Unlimited both with BlueHost). Is there any way to make sure that the people using my hosting provide a link back without checking up on them every few days? Like a global footer for all the accounts. Any help would be great!

The best would be to get a reseller hosting plan as then people can have their own cpanel so then can make databases and have email accounts and so on. The footer thing i don't think is possible to do.

Hmmm...I was really looking for something that I could add on to my current setup for free. Theres only a few people I was going to offer this to, so maybe it would be better to just make them ftp accounts and make the databases for them.

I have a paid hosting account, if thats what you mean by servers. I dont have my own though. Ill look into this, hope it works for what I need done, thanks for the link -D-

There's no way on earth you'll be able to sell hosting from a shared hosting account. You will need to hire servers from a site such as http://site5.com or purchase a reseller hosting plan from a web host of your choice that offers resellers.

Well I never thought about selling it. I own wanted a few friends of mine to be able to use my account, without giving them access to my main sites ftp account. Ill just set them up a personal ftp account for each of them and create the databases for them then. Thanks for all the help!

A problem with allowing people to use your hosting space like you are is that if someone breaks the hosts TOS you will get the blame aimed at you as the account is in your name and as far as they know as it is not a reseller they think only you use the account.

A few problems here...

1) If you create them their own FTP accounts they'll still have access to the main file system.

2) You would need to give them cPanel access for them to be able to do anything with their databases.

I would just get a cheap reseller from somewhere and manually create their accounts from there ~smile~

All other points discussed are correct except this one. You can create multiple ftp accounts and disallow access to certain areas. You can do this manually or you can use a script such as eXtplorer. As mentioned earlier, I wouldn't allow your friends access either. Tell them to get their own free or paid hosting, or pay for a resellers account then host them under that account.

I would just get a resellar acount and site5 are the best for that.

its only $30 a month

Well I cant really cough up $30 a month at this point in time, but now that I know to get a reseller hosting account I will look into this when I can cough up $30 a month, less than two years from now...

My parnets hate doing money transfers online. For my birthday I didnt get paid hosting, I got the ability to BUY paid hosting. The $160 still came outta my pocket -evil-

~lol~

Mine are the same way. I just give them the money, withdraw it from their bank account with PayPal, and send the money from there. ~wink~

As a customer, I would never join up with a host that was a reseller.

Why? Most hosts are resellers anyway. Very few actually OWN the servers they host sites on, only the big ones. Most just rent them from bigger companies

I would rather get hosting from a company who rents servers from a bigger company over someone who is a reseller for someone who rents servers from a bigger company or even further down the line than that. If that makes any sense.

Yeah it does...but sometimes you just cant tell anymore lol. Of course the best idea would be to just go start your own company with your own servers -😉-

Web Hosting is a great passive income but just remember, like alot of things these days, its a flooded market.

That's also the most expensive option and the most hassle to operate ~lol~ At least if you hire servers if something goes wrong you can blame somebody else ~cheesey_grin~
