Not all touch screens are equal, there are resistive and capacitive ones. There is a quick test to see what type of touch screen you have. Use the tip of your finger nail (as long as they are not too sharp, don't want to scratch your screen) and press an icon on the screen, while making sure your actual skin of your finger does NOT touch the screen. If that action works then you have a resistive screen if it does not work, you have a capacitive screen (as long as you did this test with the device switched on and screen lock off).
