I'm thinking about relaunching an abandoned super casual general discussion forum that I launched for a short period a year or so ago. I'm probably going to start fresh cause I think I ended up wiping the database etc not to mention I'm probably going to use a different platform.

How do you feel about coming back around to a project you've abandoned but want to restart? Do you think the perception of people from the outside would greatly prevent them from joining?

For me, I have a hard time joining projects that end within a year and then restart and then end. So if you're going to do it, then commit and let your members know it's longterm 🙂

Hell with it, why not? If you think that you want to open up an old project and look at a different angle of then I would.

As long as you ahve good amount of support and the backing

Maybe start a new one with a new name and just start over. I'll definitely join 🥰

I've also thought about relaunching an old forum I used to have. I'm still in touch with some of the old members and they've brought it up. Mainly the time commitment is why I haven't done it. Although if someone else wanted to give it a go, I would definitely support them in any way I can.

I relaunched an old forum not too long ago. Mind you though this forum was offline for a while, and was founded in 2013. No one came back but it was for a game that didn't do well. I say go with what your heart wants! Bring it back if you really want it to return, I'll definitely join if you decide on bringing it back!

It's always worth a try! What is the project that you might bring back?

I think it depends on how long the project has been abandoned and the reasoning behind it. Is it something that was started two weeks ago, abandoned a week later, then all of a sudden, you're wanting to pick it back up a month later? Might be a little wary about that depending on the reasoning. Obviously we don't need to know all the details, but for me, I'm more likely to look more favorably upon personal issues coming up over just losing interest in the project or things not going well with the project in the beginning. Personal issues happen, and sometimes, they're just out of your control. But if you've already lost interest in the project once or ran into issues with it that led to it being abandoned, who's to say it won't happen again?

The idea of starting up a forum or a blog bounces around in my head on occasion, but what stops me is the commitment. Yes, I'll go all in on the project at the start, but then a few weeks later, I'll burn out and end up losing interest and end up abandoning it. Sometimes I circle back to it, sometimes I don't. I just don't want to pull people that are supporting me and the project on a string and lead them on if I'm invested and all in one week and burn out the next. I've had that happen where I've helped start up an RP community, then inclement weather happened in one of the admins' areas and after that, everything was just abandoned by everyone when we were so close to opening up. Obviously the inclement weather was out of everyone's control (and I certainly hope the person affected ended up being okay!), but it ultimately ended up leading to me taking over the project until it inevitably fizzled out (as most RP sites tend to do after some time) between the community no longer being engaged and me just burning out for several reasons.

At the end of the day though, if it's something you're wanting to commit to again and bring back to life, go for it! You might have some people with negative opinions, but don't let 'em bring you down! I'm sure you'll end up finding plenty more people willing to support the project at the end of the day, and it'll all work out in the end.

I completely get your point about burnout and commitment, that’s honestly the biggest risk with projects like forums or blogs. For me, the difference this time is making sure there’s a clear reason why I’m coming back to it, rather than just jumping in on motivation alone. If the foundation and mindset are different, the chances of it lasting are too.

If you have people onboard and ready to support the project, then I say go with it.

If not, you can still try it and see if it amounts to anything.

I've relaunches past projects. I relaunched AAF and it's staying fairly active. I relaunched a storm spotter forum and it never caught on again.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it fails.

Chatty Wizards specifically. In my eyes a true escape from the day to day stupidity of the real world and social media.
Very neat! How long ago did you have this project, and how long was it active?

It was about a year ago I originally launched it and it was active for a bit until I had to reorganize priorities but I've got a decent balance going now.

The problem is I liked the name and I was still able to renew it 🙂 🧙‍♂️

Restarting it is just fine, if you ask me. However, you would need to do serious marketing while being super active on the forum over a period just to prove to members that you are taking the project serious. It won't be easy, but it is possible.

Wishing you all the best!

These days I am running a mental health forum which I had abandoned for over a year.
