Review Geo Journalist

I have already mentioned to you that I think your design is extremely strong, and visually pleasing. I also already mentioned to you that one of my primary issues with your site is the unreadable text, however since you know about that, I won't divulge to much into it. The last "major" thing that I think defiantly needs improvement is the quality of some of the photographs/images on your site. On the first 4, the quality of images are extremely high, and make a great look. However, beyond the yahoo image, you can see that the images start to become lower quality, because they were either already of lower quality, or they were stretched out to fit the box. Regardless, the noise added to them because of this contradicts the clean look from the text. If you can improve these two areas, I think it will be a visually stunning website. Very nice!

I've already fixed the readability issue, as I said.

As for the images, the earlier images were used on a different theme and that therefore explains why they aren't "perfect" on this new theme. If I get the time, I **may** update the images but I won't make any promises.

Thanks for your opinion.

Hello there, Geo.

I love that your site is using "new-age" coding and ways to present your website.

Images are still loading a bit slower than the rest of the website, though.

I suggest you run your images through an image compressor. Yahoo has a great one!

Also, you might consider using gzip compression as well as adding expired headers. 🙂

Overall, nice work!

Thanks Exel. I'm still looking into more ways to increase the speed, unfortunately that is a downside to this awesome theme. It's always improving though, keep checking. 🙂

What I really love is that the theme is dynamic, and isn't just the same theme everywhere. I mean, for every story, the image is supporting the entry. I think that it adds some personality to your blog because like I said, people don't like the same thing all of the time, at least I don't. So, everytime someone comes to your blog, it's always different and draws them in! Nice job there!

I'm pretty sure my internet plays a role in why the pictures still load slowly for me. For readability the home page is good, but when I tried to click on the other menu, those other pages didn't have a darker background like in the home page so it's a bit harder to read texts there. Maybe most only visit the home page, but if you're looking to improve all aspects you can consider that too.

Keep up the good work.

I have to say Geo, I really do like your blog and it is a good read. The theme is great, but for me using a wide screen it gets a bit much sometimes with the images and moving elements. The font is very condensed and becomes quite hard to read at times, maybe something that is a bit bolder?

Phio: I'm not really sure what you mean about the other pages... The other pages (really, it's just About and my Contact Form) have a lighter background, yes, but have black text. How is that hard to read?

Tindris: Thank you. I'm not surprised it can be annoying on wide screens, it can be hard for any theme to suit wide and small resolutions (and unfortunately, most people focus on the smaller set lol).

Keep your comments coming. Be sure to read some of the posts there as well, I've been posting quite regularly lately.

I mean the category tabs. Here's a screenshot of what I mean. In that example, the first line is a bit unclear. It's probably nothing too important, but I'm just saying.

Really nice site, love the imagery. Only downside is it takes quite a while to load some images, and you may want to think about darkening the photos a bit as sometimes the text can be difficult to read.

phio, oh, I see what you mean! The content background I added to the homepage isn't showing because I only put it for the .home class. I had to, because otherwise it would show not only on category pages, but on single post pages as well and that's just hideous. I'll see what I can do, but no promises.

Flux, thanks!

No problem. Where do you get your images?
I use sxc.hu a lot, the free ones at least. Most of the recent images (since I started using this theme) came from there because they're large enough that I can fit them in for a nice background.

Yes, it looks better now. But well, if you're getting a new custom theme, good luck with that one too although I honestly think your current theme is already awesome. ^^;

The only problem is the load time. 😛

Any more feedback?

FYI, the site now uses hashtags, which I'll be including in my posts from now on as necessary. You can already see them in use on my about page: http://geojournalist.net/about

-- 23 Jun 2013, 15:56 --

Changed the theme.
