I've seen a lot of role playing forums. But I'm so confused what to do on them. Can anyone explain what to do in a role playing forum?

For the most part, a roleplaying forum is a forum designed for writers to tell a story within a given universe. Typically posts are written in 3rd person, past tense much like a book. But unlike a book, the writer only controls one character at a time. (You can usually have multiple characters, but you have to have separate accounts for each character. Though this may vary per site so it's worth it to read the individual site's rules and ask questions. Most roleplay admins are pretty friendly and would prefer people to ask questions if it means they can help.)

Most roleplay forums are set around a single time/place/setting. It may be an original one where the site's creator/owner has made the whole game from scratch (So you never know what to expect here since people are pretty varied). Other times it is a roleplay based on an existing work. Common examples of these are Harry Potter or X-men/Superhero. Though you'll also find all sorts of other roleplays... (Ones based on movies, games, books, comics and more.) So mostly you have to check around to find one you're interested in (or ask someone who you know is into roleplaying to refer you to a good site).

When you join a roleplaying forum, there is usually some process you go through, generally:
- Read the plot (so you know whether or not the forum interests you.)
- Read the rules (so you know what sort of expectations the staff has.)
- Join
- Get the character sheet and fill it in. (This is who you'll be writing for. )
- Wait for the character to be approved. (Most characters are reviewed within 24-72 hours and if there are problems the admins get back to you pretty quickly.)
- After being accepted then you find a spot and introduce your character.
- After you've posted then someone else can take a turn and add a reply.

So basically it's like writing a book except you only control one character and other people control the others so you never know exactly what is going to happen.

We allow only one account per member so we got all our characters on one account. {Planning on bringing in sub accounts though, if all works out with them, but it would still be one account per member and all sub accounts under one account, and the use of subs would be optional.}

You roleplay on a roleplay forum. We do 3rd person/past tense like Virus said, but we also got a section for people to RP any style they like.

When you join an RPG..read the rules. Trust me it'll show, and the admins will kiss the ground you walk on XD

To just add a little upon the two stories of the poster above me.

On RPGs you roleplay with the character you have come up/written yourself. Through roleplaying with others you develop a character, and together you expand on the setting that you roleplay on. Basically roleplaying is a form of collaborative writing.

The settings of RPGs are endless, there are RPGs based on fandoms (x-men, glee, star wars), fantasy, sci-fi, real life, high school and much more. So the possibilities of what characters you can play are endless as well. You can choose to play characters from fandom, for instance Storm from x-men, but also to create your own original character.

But if your confused, but interested in trying it out then you should. Most rpg admins would be very happy to help you out and explain how their rpg works and to get you to rp as well.

Yeah, we have an rpg section though only I have used it, 😛

Just depends on the users' preference.

A good admin of an RPG will be patient as a glacier with a new player as long as that new player is clearly being kind and trying their best. If you run into one that is short with you early on because you didn't observe X rule, yet you clearly just overlooked it...I would just keep looking for another RPG.

You know what's weird? My forum has an RPG section, that seems to be fairly popular. We've got eight RPGs going at the moment... and I've never ever bothered participating in one, and rarely even read through the section. =P

Role playing forums is the same as role playing in real life except in posts.
