I am making an rpg forum at the moment that looks like it can be big. The big question is, do i charge people to join? Like, to get people to try it on a free package for a month, and then have them pay to use it otherwise? Or do i have it pretty much free, but offer premium accounts. Any help?

I would offer premium accounts if I were you. Paying for membership is a big turn off.

Yeah, I agree with Cloverfield. If you offered some sort of 'VIP' rank for donations, or exclusive items, then it could work. However, for a new site, a payment for registration would probably cause a more negative stigma than a positive.

I agree. Offer a separate special account for people who donate or help the board alot. Like they said having a board I have to pay to use is a big turn off for alot of people.

Okay! Great! I am going to be offering premium accounts! Thanks for the help! 🙂

Here's a word of advice: NEVER EVER CHARGE FOR REGISTRATION. If you REALLY need to make money off a forum, put AdSense or something on it. If you charge for registration, you will get <2% of the registrations you would be able to get, considering most people on forums don't have credit cards.

The only way to charge people to join is if your site will be success meaning total exposure meaning such things as advertising on tv ect.. is the only way you would get known.

Free to play, getting special items or worlds or more quests = charge.

If you're famous and people really want to join your forum, then people might pay to join. Otherwise, I'd agree, don't charge for registrations. Making it free to join and then charging for premium services is the way to go.

Ok! Thanks for the feedback! I am going to be offering a premium package! Thanks!

Offer premium services, but don't charge for registration. Its really as simple as that.
