I'm just wondering how many forums have rules about the Good English? On my forum (because it's a writers' forum) it's an absolute necessity. Also I find txt spk appallingly difficult to read 🙂

How about everyone else?

The only rule about "Good English" on my site is to my staff members. I can understand a writing site having a requirement for good English grammar and spelling!

I always have a good English rule for Staff and other Team personnel, I can't stand 'txt tlk' either, keep it to texts and other things.

I used to txt tlk all day when on the internet, and made an even harder to read version XD but made a complete reverse and made my grammar good 2 months before making my first forum.

Only my staff members need to use proper English. Capitalization doesn't matter all that much though.

Txt spk has never really been a problem on any of the forums I go to anyway.

I perfer members use good English, but I don't mind some txt spk, like, 'g2g', 'brb', 'bbl', and so on.
'Specially if there's a point to be made. Examples: Joking around, acting 'epic'.

While I'm at it, and you really didn't bring this up: Spelling.
We're using Proboards, so we have a spell checker. No excuse, really, but I understand typos, like 'hte' instead of 'the'.
Who spell checks for that?

My rules specify that the posts have to be readable. If the posts are too hard to read due to text walls, grammar, spelling, alls caps, or anything like that my staff are to either make it readable or treat it as spam. Otherwise, we don't force correct grammar on anyone.

I don't think i've ever included a rule about proper grammar on one of my sites. However, I have set a rule saying all posts must be in English.

That's ridiculous to order your members to speak a certain way. If they want to type like this " yo wazup duds ? " then let em'!

You're only aggravating membership like that.

It is, however expected for Staff to type properly.

English is a great tool to make your forum stand out from the crowd. Generally if you get a few grammar nazi's you may find that you only get "More Mature" people to your board.

If you let grammar fly, you may find out you end up with only younger users.. It can be hard to draw the line in between.

u c i find it annoying wen ppl pst liek dis. it is reely hrd 2 understnd dem.

^^Apart from the fact that it is hard to understand, I also have a certain pride about having a forum with near perfect English from most members. It also makes my blood boil having to read it.

But then again I'm not called the ''Evil Dictatorial Admin'' for no reason. People still read and post though...

This is the internet.

Meaning...

Should be enough to understand by saying that itself if you're an avid internet user.

Why bother having "good English" on the internet? This is not English class. if sum1 goes around n talkin like dis, then who really cares? I could care less what rule you have on your own forum, but if you get irritated at internet language like that, you might as well just stay away from forums altogether.

I can see the reasoning for making staff members have proper English, but it shows a sense of professionalism and maturity. But for regular members, just let them post the way they want.

This is an English speaking forum. If you're not fluent in English, make your posts more understandable so that members know what you're trying to say.
This is my regulation for this kind of subject. Besides, most of us can speak English well anyway.. apart from one person but at least he doesn't talk though a broken translator.

Well we are a writers' forum, and as a result we encourage good English. Also there are a good few non native speakers on the internet who would have difficulty understanding text speak.

One forum that I know that has over 19,800 members has the strictest rules that I know regarding English... People mind it less than you think. 🙂
