When publishing articles online at other blogs and sites, even article directories, you should make sure the pages that your content on includes the no index meta tag to ensure the page is not followed. This will be especially important, if you have already published the same article on your own site first. In situations where Google finds more than one copy of the same content on the web, it is likely to pick the most 'relevant' result according to it's own algorithm and show that site's page (with your content published on it) in the top spot for your keywords. In some cases, this might not be your own site, which was the first site of publication.
