This is one of those curious things about the market, they're mostly just people copying each other without any real individual goals:
MyBB is copying XenForo.
phpBB is copying MyBB.
MyBB is copying phpBB.
XenForo is copying Discourse badly and MyBB.
In the end, they'll probably gravitate towards more or less the same set of features, although some may deem certain ones too "enterprise" to include in the core, but they'll still be there as plugins for all intents and purposes.
Back in the day, some of the free players kind of turned their noses up at alerts and likes as inefficient and superfluous, but they all seem to be hopping onto the bandwagon these days after seeing the sheer popularity of those things.
I've also seen some new software popping up here and there and it's either a clone of Discourse or looks like something out of 2002 or 2009, as if we didn't have enough of those already. Some people are so bored of the status quo, that they're reaching out to some really wacky looking wannabe disrupters to deal with the situation.
And practically every admin with the resources to do so are rolling their own custom systems from what I've seen, it's only becoming more and more common as the stagnation gets worse. It's a very curious situation, indeed.
