It is a policy in our home to unplug any appliance that is not in use. We started doing that when we were advised by our cable tv provider that the attached digibox consumes electricity when plugged even if the switch is turned off. To make it more convenient, all our appliances are plugged in a surge protector that has a switch, just like the AVR of the computer. Instead of unplugging, we just click on the switch and electricity is cut off.
