I've had a fair few bad experiences with script autoinstallers. Fantastico barely updates it's software these days. An SMF installation I made with Installatron was filled with php syntax errors. Because of this, I always manually install scripts that I actually intend to use for serious purposes.

But now, last month Hawkhost gave it's customers a new autoinstaller called Softaculous. This one has over 128 scripts including a couple of unusual ones like Dolphin (a social networking script) and actually appears to be updating them regularly.

Have you ever used autoinstallers? Which ones did you use? What were your experiences?

I'm currently on Fantastic Hosting, and I usually use Installatron to install my scripts. I've used it once this time around when I opened my board back in January, and I used it to install PHPBB. I can't remember using softcalculous, although I have briefly experimented with it. Someone once advised me against using one of those autoinstall scripts, but I can't remember which one it was.

Softaculous > Installatron(?) > Fantastico

Just my opinion 🙂

I use Fantastico to install my scripts for me. Have been doing it for over a year. Always works well without any problems.

I never use script installers. They suck 🙂 I go manually instead. It doesn't take long if you know what you are doing.

I don't use script installers as they aren't reliable or supported. Its better to install them fresh as they are more supported.

Yeah I manually install anything half important. Autoinstallers are good if you just want to experiment though. However, has anyone had a positive experience with an autoinstaller so far?

@ Shotgun - Fantatico takes weeks, if not Months, to update it's scripts...

I only use them to test out softwares. If i want to just see what a software is like and i have no intention to make it into a live site then i will use it as it is quicker. I have yet to use Softaculous which Hawkhost added recently.

Not used Softaculous, but have used Fantastico in the past. I never used it on a live site though, just for testing purposes. If I liked the script then I would install it manually.

I had a problem with the folders not having the right CHMOD, which was my only problem.

Well, it's not too bad to upgrade SMF though, cause you can just upload the upgrade package through the Admin CP's package manager.

I've used Fantastico quite a few times to isntall WordPress, and it worked fine every time.

Yeah, but the version of WP that's they are running is out of date. I know it's easy to update, but all the same...
