If you were to think about selling would you or would you just keep the database in case you wanted to start the forum again?

If there was ever a chance you might want to start it up again I wouldn't sell it. Although if you're getting offered a lot of money for it then selling might be the better option. Also I'm sure there will be some legal issues involved with selling and then starting the forum again with a backup of the database.

If I was using a provider that didn't delete the forum after a certain amount of days with no activity, I'd keep it. If it did delete the forum after inactivity, I'd sell it.

I've no plans to sell any forums. However, if I was selling I would consider the database to be the property of the new owner and hence understand that I had no further rights to it, for that reason I would not keep a copy of it. Unless of course I had come to a specific express agreement with the buyer which allowed me to maintain a copy of the database.

I have sold a lot of forums, and have no databases that I have kept. Once you sell it, it is their property. Other than that, selling it is some thing you should do when you have no passion any longer for the forum that you are running.

Just as Fergal and John said, it becomes their property, So we have no rights to keep them.

You must consider selling a forum only when you lost interest in that niche, and when you are sure, you will never be interested in it again.

Agreed, You have no rights once sold

Well Fergal was on the money here but the only circumstances that I would keep the database is if the new owner somehow got the database corrupt or something happened that led to the database not working, I would still have a working copy.

If you were to delete it, the new owner might ask for a refund. I would say delete it until you know the new owner is satisfied with the database and all the files.

You have to always be cautious.

I would never personally keep a copy of the database for my own personal reasons, however I know someone who sold a forum and kept the database to it. Not good as he could just start it back up again whenever he wants to.

Hmm I'd keep the database for about a month. I may decide to just go back and continue with the forum. After a month I'm sure I'm not going back and just delete it off my computer.

No reason not to keep it just for posterity. You never know years down the line what will go down and who can prove you kept a copy anyway if you don't upload it anywhere?

Bill Gates, Donald Trump and Mark Zuckerberg together couldn't afford to buy my forum though, so it's not a worry for me 🙂
