I am thinking of selling stock images (i.e. an image of a cup of coffee with the background cut out, or an image of a lake) that people have the rights to redistribute and edit in whatever way they like; do you think this is do-able? How much would an image sell for?

Yes it can be done, but it will take a lot of hard work and dedication to make it a success, as you will have some very well established competitors. A guy from Ireland had huge success with a stock images site - Stockbyte sold for $135m.

The headlines mentions job losses, which makes it sound negative, but the 28 employees were given "€5m after tax between them" by the company founder, so they did very well out of it.

Ah I see, thanks for sharing! I need to look into it more, about the whole legal process and whatnot.

Just get a good camera and pay lots of attention to details. Your stock photo customers will be ad agencies or bloggers who visit the photo sites looking for image downloads. Some images can go for as little as $1.00 per download or up to $65 or more for an exclusive (only sold once) image.

Thanks 🙂 I have some okay cameras in this house, I'd probably need to upgrade though.

It's very profitable if done right. A large portion of websites out there rely on stock images to make their brand presentable. There is a member on digitalpoint that made a very cool site. http://stockola.com

Ah cool 🙂 I imagine it's not that easy to set up a site like that, lots of money involved too.

Yeah, when I first saw it I was impressed. He has developed a pretty cool concept & site. He was on DP asking for photographers to join, I myself don't do photographing so I was unable to help him there.

I'm actually really into photography, and have been looking into selling stock images. It something you can definitely make money on if you have a lot of interest in taking pictures, and have the dedication.

If you're interested in getting into photography I'd recommend checking out the Canon - EOS Rebel T3i. 🙂
